Projector retrofit help!?

I received a set of hid/halo projectors from spec d tuning as a gift and they look awesome! But they work much less than awesome... the stock 06 projectors I had worked much better with the Hids than these new ones. I'm thinking about buying a projector retrofit kit from the retrofit source but I have no idea what projectors to get. I saw they had a spec d retro fit kit but I don't even know what brand my lights are, they came from spec d tuning but the boxes were completely unbranded...
I don't want to tear apart my stock headlights either so I can sell them down the road.. does anybody know what direction I should go for an hid projector?

Personally I would consider retrofitting the stock housings. They're much better built, and if you're putting money into the retrofit do it once and do it right! Use the 3rd-party ones temporarily until the retrofit is done. Even a morimoto swap (from what I've heard) is rather easy, and should be something anyone can tackle.

Taking the headlight apart isnt very difficult either, I'd say its probably the most tedious part of a simple retrofit. It's just not worth retrofitting those black headlights, as the plastic might melt from the HIDs (as has happened on the forum to other members) or just from the sun hitting it in a peculiar spot.

i've email TRS recently for the same upgrade. they suggested the kit below as the diameter of the projector will fit into the 4th gen housing. but instead of opening my oem headlights, i got a depots to try out. i have not installed it as of yet, but perhaps this weekend. the kit below has all the connectors, ballast, igniter, bulbs and shrouds. from what i've seen, everything seems to be plug and play.

you do know theres a big difference in the aftermarket headlight shroud than the oem on, you see its different in certain areas, so far at these pics everyone post, its the high beam part, I think with better pics, I might see more differences. well have the lights adjust, 25 ft with a 3 inch drop if your truck is lifted.

Here's some more pics of the headlight, I have emailed the retrofit source asking for help on the low beam projector. To me it looks like a lot of the outside of the headlight is the same? For aiming these what I did was I left the old lights in and traced the z line from each side onto the wall and then when I got the new unit in I aimed each light individually to line up to the z line and the outcome is that staggered look, also these projectors have hot spots and they don't project as wide as the stock units

the shroud still look a little different, since the highs have the shroud covering up more due to the angle eyes.
proper headlight aim is back the truck up, headlight projector is 25 feet from wall, measure the height of the projector itself, let say 36, so on the wall you will need to measure 33 and use the lower step to aim at that height. i suggest 3 inch for lifted and modded 4runners. 2.5 is pushing the glare.

Would a projector retrofit from the retrofit source work? I'm much more concerned with low beam than high beams? How would I know what size or style projectors to order?

cant really tell you, unless you have the lights apart, if its similar on the inside as the oem, you can fit the 4.0 or any rx or s2k with mod. if its different on the inside similar to the spec d, then use the spec d adapter, but with mods you can still fit any projector you want.

For mods, are we talking making my own metal brackets or just cutting:drilling/trimming some plastic?

Little off topic. Im finishing my retro fit and drop my projector lens. Damnit. Put a good chip in it. I'm willing to bet it's junk now. What you guys think? I emailed TRS but haven't heard back yet on what they think.

Here’s my retrofit kit for reference. It’s the Bi-Xenon: Morimoto Mini H1 Stage III. You can see the depots taken apart. The projector shaft fits into the orig low beam shield and is boosted down. All plug and play.

I have the retro quick kit that was offered. Has not been plug and play like its supposed to. The supplies brackets didn't fit. The ignitors are square and don't fit the rubber seal. They are the acme ds2 projectors with Phillips bulbs. I think I might order the mini 4.0 ds2 projectors and the right ignitors.

i would say the older d2s connector was smaller than the new ones, since the new ones are suppose to be better. if you still worry about that, i would use the straight d2s connector with the amp connectors, then buy the new amp connectors for the ballast. sell that bulky d2s connector or keep it.

depends , some make brakets, some trimmed the mounting plate of the headlight, i did that, and then just jb weld all the loose parts to make it strong.
sometimes trimming the braket will help give you more clearance from the projector lens and shroud.

As an update I ordered the d2s 4.0 projectors and hid bulbs from the retrofit source (I already have an h11 hit system so I should be able to just swap a few wires)
I plan to get them into my spec d housings and use my stock housings meantime

I just ordered the d2s 4.0 also. I hooked up the acme d2s setup and wasn't happy with the color change and low side output light. Very narrow light width. Don't get me wrong, much better than stock projectors. But nothing compared to a quality projector.
