Ok I will be attempting to install some of the Mini D2s projectors into my stock housings hopefully this weekend! I know there are multiple threads addressing many different things about the procedure. However, all of the "how to" threads say to remove the back of the housing (black plastic portion) along with the adjustment screws. My question is why is it necessary to remove? I understand removing them if you are using the FX-R projectors that require cutting the housings, but just don't understand why it is necessary to remove them using the mini kit which does not require any cutting of the housings. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Just trying to keep everything as simple as possible and not do anything that is not actually necessary.

While no cutting is necessary, you do need to bake the housings to open them up. As a precaution, this is why you should remove the back of the housing just to be sure you don't mess it up while baking the headlight in the oven or heating it with a heat gun ( I used the oven method, 265F for 10 minutes). Plus, it's easier to install the projector with just the headlight bowl at hand. It wont take you more than a couple of minutes to disassemble the housings.

When I did my retrofit, I never removed the back of the headlights or the adjuster screws. I baked the whole headlight assemblies in the oven. Didn't have any problems. Mine were OEM headlights, not sure if the cheaper aftermarket headlights would fair as well though.
the headlight is essentially a sealed beam style onto a rectangular bracket which it mounts onto. the bracket then mounts onto the car.
you seperate the headlight housing from the bracket because it is much easier to work with. there is a tension spring, a pivot point, and 2 adjusting bolts.
i just recently did my retrofits. what i did was bought a 2nd set of headlights.
i wish i took pictures through out the procedure. it was a lot easier than when i did the retrofits on my other car.
i bought my projectors off hid source.
oem depo headlights, retrofit hidsource bixenon projectors w/ e46 shrouds.

I think the same: you separate the headlight housing from the bracket because it is much easier to work with. there is a tension spring, a pivot point, and 2 adjusting bolts and thats it, but i didn't want to mess up with my lights so i ordered a custom set from hidretrofitkit i left that to the pros, but if you want to save some money yes do it yourself at your own risk i broke 2 lamps trying to do it myself, so i then decided that was not for me. Good luck with that.
