Most of us know this, but I just want to reiterate all of the joy you get from exercising your 4WD and E-locker for the general road warriors. FSM recommends something like 10 miles per month, but I find that just shifting it in for short sections every few works well too.
A. Your actuators will thank you, and they will be happy, which means your system will engage and disengage smoothly. (I personally have worked out an uncomfortable clunk when disengaging my Tacoma 4WD after just a couple of cycles in and out over the past few weeks, as well as my rear locker goes in and out buttery smooth without needing to roll in reverse. Not to mention getting my wife's 4runner, which the PO never put in 4WD, to go from a blinking light to solid (trying to engage to actually engaged) in all situations in the matter of a couple seconds compared to minutes after only a couple weeks of exercise each morning)
B. You'll get practice using these systems, so if you find yourself in a ditch or offroading for the first time, you'll be well versed in what your machine should do/act when entering or exiting 4WD or locked.
C. You'll be driving on a gravel, dirt, mud, or otherwise unpaved surface while doing your 4WD/Locker calisthenics, and that just generally brings more joy to your life.
I need to do the "gray wire" mod on my wife's 4runner, which I think is actually the orange/blue wire mod on 4runners, so I can easily stretch out her rear....locker. I've just ignored doing it even though it is a super simple and super useful mod. So once done, I expect a few days of stretching and the system will be happier than it has been since rolling off the lot.
