Pulled the rear axles today........

My tears have been leaking and occasionally it felt like the drums were getting stuck and I would have to give it some gas to get the truck to move. Finally tore into it yesterday and this is what I found.

. This only on the passengers side.

What now?

Is your concern with the rust spots? Admittedly, that is a strange place for rust spots but I don't think anything there is making contact. It is hard to tell though with the pictures. Those rust spots could be metal pieces from somewhere that have have fused to those spots.

The bearings are getting replaced so nothing to be concerned about there. The rust spots inside the axle housing itself are my concern.

I replaced this axle housing a year ago and don't want another huge expense. Is there a way I can sand it down myself?

If I ran into the same scenario, I would start off with an abrasive 3m pad and some WD-40. I've used the white 3m pad before, and it does a great job of removing rust, but it's not too abrasive to where it will cause damage.

So is it salvageable?

Of course it is. That area is not critical for any kind of sealing or anything I would go to HD and get a small brass wire wheel and put it on your drill and clean up the bore and ABS rotor. Brake clean it all up real good, get a new oring for the seal between the axle and the hub and call it fixed. JUst be careful when putting the axle back in. Make sure to do the grease test when everthing goes back together when you do the bearings. I assume your replacing the inner retainer, seal, oring, and bearing on each side.

You still have to figure out why you weren't moving when giving it gas.

I'll definitely give it a shot. I have some triple 0 grade Brillo (save on chrome) that I'll try using. Hope for the best.

What I've accomplished so far. Not sure how much better it will get. What do you guys think? Good enough or should I try something else? This was done using triple 0 steel wool

Try some crocus cloth? or some real fine emery paper.

Or I'd do like someone else mentioned, get a wire wheel and clean it up.

I'd be more worried about the abs reluctor wheel being too rusty and giving a false reading.. But even that doesn't look too bad..
Clean them up the best you can. Doesn't look like anything is touching?

I would replace the o ring that seals the tube and check the abs sensor too.. Maybe the o ring on that is shot too.. Letting a little water in at times?
Don't know if you can buy one separate or might be able to match one up?

Only thing I can think of is a rubber Outer O ring or the ABS sensor not fully seated as the gear has rust. But like you stated, you replaced the axle housing so perhaps there prior to install.

Were your axles fully seated to the 4 bolt flange ? You can also try a small nylon wheel to remove the rust...

It should be fine. As the actual seal sits further in. And no oil should be in that area. Is your bearing bad ? Does it have play ?

It's crazy because I though my front bearing was going bad. Because I could hear noise (like bad wheel bearing ) under my feet. Turns out that my rear bearing was shot and the sound was traveling all the way to the front. I replaced both front wheel bearings and it didn't fix the problem (thinking originally that it was my front wheel bearing ) now she rides smooth !!

I just did my rear axle seal and bearing yesterday. Total $35. Hahah OEM aftermarket parts. Meaning they are OEM just not in Toyota boxes. And got discount because my buddy is a mechanic so they get commercial discounts.

Thanks for the input guys. When I pulled the abs sensors there was oil in there as well. Cleaned it as best I could then realized I probably should not have used steel wool in there since the abs sensor is a magnet. I cleaned it out slapped everything together. Ran short on gear fluid so after this run to the store I'll let you guys know how I make out.

I am in the same boat! Just slide under the truck and found out passenger side axle seal is leaking!! Have to wait until Monday to buy the seal from the dealer. Pulled the drums and cleaned it. Going to replace both sides.

Thanks for the pictures

No problem. Definitely check out the other threads on here. Very helpful. Took me a while but I finished. Started driving felt good but wouldn't stop. 1st time bleeding brakes and $50 later turns out I didn't tighten the rear brake lines enough! Now they feel great but I still have to replace the shoes and resurface the drums.
