Pump me up. Do's and don'ts with the BL steering extention

On to my next mod. a 1" body lift. Not worried about the spacers for the body but gun shy of the steering spacer. What are some do's and don'ts with this step. I have heard issues with clock spring, not getting it lined up, binding after install. SO what do I need to look for, do and precautions not to screw up my install.

I had no issues what so ever. I even moved my wheel a hole bunch while doing it. Was a bit of a pain to get in, but not too bad.
 
I found the steering spacer to be a total PITA. I did a 1.25" body lift and, in hindsight, do not see why I needed the spacer. If I were to do it over again, I would've left the spacer off.

Did you loosen off your steering slip yoke when you installed yours? It made installing it significantly easier.
 
If you are only doing a 1" BL, a steering extension isn't necessary. Don't waste your time or money on a steering extension unless you plan to go bigger than 1"

What kit are you/did you buy?

have not bought it yet but it will either be the Toytec 1" or I believe someone told me RB has or can do a 1". I have not 100% completely decided on a size but 1' seemed to fit my needs better and I did not want to deal with the gaps some experience with the 1.5 lifts

Go with the 4Crawler BL (4Crawler.com main page). His site is a bit confusing, but highly recommend his kit.

I ordered the 1.5" and this is what I ordered:

You could order the same kit, but specify 1" and eliminate the "SE."

I installed a 1" and didn't need a spacer but definitely needed to move my slip yoke and this was the biggest pain of the entire job. The yoke simply would not budge no matter what we did. Finally, we brought out a torch to heat the damn thing and that finally did the trick.

Guess some will be more stuck than others. I didn't have too much trouble moving mine. It did take some...convincing... though. :boxer:
 
I guess my biggest concern is with not damaging the clock spring in the wheel. I cannot imagine how the wheel would spin while putting in this spacer so I would have no ideal on how to prevent it. Any feedback on how to stop the steering wheel from spinning and damaging the spring?

I had to spin my wheel in order to get the spacer in because I couldn't get the steering column bolts to fit. Thus, having to spin the wheel to allow enough of a gap for the 2nd bolt to slide in with a little elbow grease. In fact, my first attempt I had the steering wheel cocked right with my wheels straight...so, I had to try it again, and got everything lined up.

The other option is to cut the steering extension, which will not affect the integrity of it's purpose, but make the install much easier without having to spin the wheel. See pic below (Photo credit to [MENTION=95421]Troymclure[/MENTION]):

But again, if you are only doing a 1" body lift, don't even hassle with the steering extension, as it is NOT required.

Take the cable off and reinstall it after you get the shaft lined up properly to avoid breaking it. Here's a post I made a while back about "timing" the spiral cable.

I think I'd try rigging the wheel in place with some bungee cables and a board or something?
