Bought it today- plan to surprise him on Xmas day instead of waiting for his birthday in February so he can get used to driving it!!I know many of you think that I am crazy buying it for a 16 year old but it is what he wants and it is his for a LONG time- Just hope he doesn't wreck it too soon!!

you will find that MOST people here are very friendly and knowledgeable and most are willing to spend their time digging to find answers to your questions. you will also find that there are those people who are jealous, overly opinionated, and flat out rude.
congratulations to you and your son. you are going to make him a very happy kid. i was thrilled when i got my first 4runner (an 88 SR5 that my dad purchased new and passed to my brother then to me). you purchased a safe and dependable car. it would definitely be worth taking a video of his reaction and have a few towels ready....he just might pee or poop himself!

He will love it, and I'm sure it will give him many years of faithful service. They are very easy to maneuver/park and handle extremely well for an SUV which is a plus for young drivers.

The 4th-gen 4Runner has the second least deaths per passenger mile, it's a very safe vehicle. And it's really hard to hot-rod in, traction control kicks in for any attempt to spin the tires. Probably a good choice for safety for a 16-yr-old. If he does dumb things and tears it up, it'll be expensive, but what isn't these days? Perhaps a set of tools would be a good birthday present.
Do you live in snow country? I'm thinking not, so that takes some risk out. If he wants to off-road it, maybe get him hooked up with a club who will keep him from tearing up his new truck.

Yeah, even a 70's Volvo wagon will eventually get up to speed, not much a parent can do about that. Long ago I gave my wife my turbo Eclipse GSX, bought a VW synchro wagon, suddenly lost the urge to go fast. My wife went from an Audi 5000 wagon to the Eclipse, started getting tickets. A fast car just brings out the fast driver in most people, me included.
I feel pretty comfortable letting my teenage son drive my 4R, it's not fun to drive fast.
