Mike, the valet key does NOT need the remote, nor does it come with one from the dealer.
Mine (bought new) came with 2 master keys (black) with remotes and 1 valet key (grey). I also made a copy of one of the master keys (just the metal, no transponder) and keep it in my wallet. If I loose a master key with a remote, I would still be able to open the truck using a copy and drive it with a valet key...

I know it doesn't. But when you give your valet key to the casino or hotel peeps, how are they gonna lock and alarm your 4Runner? The only place the valet won't work is the glove box. Also if you lose/misplace your master keys, how can you turn off the alarm without the remotes?

Welcome to the forum and congratulations to you and your son!!! I'm so jealous... My first car 12 years old, cost me $800, and I had to drop a new engine into it.
Your question about the keys was already answered. As far as the surprise - I like the idea with the garage. But you must be there with him to see his face - it will be priceless... Get a video, post it on u-tube and link it here so we can all see it!!!
My 16-year old boy will be getting my truck when he gets his license. Now I have to figure out what I will get for myself... Choices, choices...

The valet key works in the door lock.
Opening the door lock with a key deactivates the alarm (IIRC, correct me if I'm wrong).
When I got my non-transponder "wallet" key I tested it, and it worked - it got me inside the truck, opened the glove-box, and I drove the truck with a valet key. May be earlier models are different, but I doubt that.

OMG..thats sooo funny....poor boy...I mean.....he is an A$$ by trying to destroy the car and deserves nothing now until he can buy it with his own money... but come on...When you have a Hummer and a Mustang and that monster truck all of them proly brand new parked in your garage?...he gonna expect something decent looking....hey the car may be in very good shape but they at least could have taken it for a cheap $300 paint job to make it look nice.... LOL

I'm confused- we locked it with the valet key- it is at my brother's office until we move it to my Mom's next week
Car salesman mentioned that if we lcoked it with remote then left them valet key alarm would go off- what alarm? i've not even looked at book but I think i need to order another keyles remote -I assume he doesn't have it since he didn't give it to me- guess the original owner didn't have it-will call him today-He did order me new car mats b/c they were dirty looking

My teenager just got sideswiped by a lady changing lanes into him, I haven't even finished fixing his rear bumper! I'm about to hang used tires all around his car to protect it from all these minor scrapes and dings. My '03 with grey plastic cladding might be just the thing for him.

I just bought a 05 4Runner and it only came with two keys (no valet) and only one remote. Dealership is going to "try" to find me another remote....otherwise a new remote is pricey if its only a back-up. But you might want your own set so it's worth looking into. (talk to the dealer and see if they already have one)
Congrats on the purchase and the great moment you'll get when you give it to him. I like the idea of the Garage too....but if it was my son....I would try to irritate him with some type of news and/or a task that makes him go into the garage all mad!!! (I love it) And then....he goes into the garage to find out his aggravation has been replaced with shock and awe. The bow.....will be awesome. You can go out there and say (with the smile you can't hold back)...."What is this?"
In terms of the decision....this was up to you and your best assessment on how your son treats his things (in general). Some 16yr/old boys would make a parent regret spending so much money and (in hind sight) find out it was a bad idea. And we can all think of various examples to support the bad idea. But other kids treat stuff right. He may get all anal retentive and take really good care of it.....like I would and still do!
You've done it and now its time to be pro-active lol. In terms of my parental ethics, I think its good to set expectations and terms that he can understand/adhere to and a variety of repercussions (that you come up with) if he doesn't work within these expectations. If he doesn't....then steps are taken. You can make this really positive and great growth experience for him! But, just like almost all (and I really want to just say ALL) teenagers....you will run into some situations that will frustrate the both of you. But you got it under control and you now have a huge piece of leverage in the most sought after SUV in the flippin' world! I wanted one when I was 16 too......he is a lucky young man and he better be respectful to his momma too! lol

Yeah, her fault, but I've had many people pull into my lane before and avoided it by crowding to the side and hammering the brakes. He apparently laid on the horn and let her run into him. Teenager, judgment, not. I wonder how much sound-proofing they put in new Jetta diesels? Probably a lot. And maybe she was blasting the tunes?

For those missing remote key fobs, you can buy them on ebay and program them yourself. I have done it for both my 3rd gen and 4th gen 4runners, as well as a couple other brand cars. They aren't expensive or hard to program. Expect to pay around 35.00 and you can find how to program using google.

Your so will be very happy with his new car. Yes they are expensive and a big responsibilty. I've been 16 since July and I've be driving since July also and I have loved every minute of having my car and continue to everytime I drive it.
