purchased a 2001 4runner limited with 57k miles. doing trans oil change

Hey guys,

So last year around Oct I purchased a 97 4runner sr5 with 217k. The trans on it died around december...I had the trans replaced for 1500 and it's been good ever since.

Forward to last Monday I found a 2001 4runner limited with 57k miles. One owner. I purchased this truck as I couldn't pass it up.

I did a oil change just yesterday. I purchased a B&m transmission cooler and have about 13 quarts of castrol atf dexron VI fluid.

My question is, is this fluid ok to use? I currently use the same in my 97 after the trans swap and it works very well but the bottle state that this is mainly for GM vehicals.

Let me know your thoughts.

Oh and I will be supercharging the truck in about a month....I purchased a supercharger as well.

I would just use the good old dex 3 or compatible. Dex vI is not compatible IMHO.

I thought anything greater is backwards compatible?

I'm not sure on that. I've not done much research but I use whatever the car calls for.

You should be OK. Fellow member kball has used it in his tranny and been fine.

That said, I'd use Castrol's Import Multi Vehichle if I could swap the Dex VI for it.

If I'm going to rebuy fluid.....might as well look at getting mobile 1 synthetic ATF.

What does everyone think of that fluid for our transmissions?

The Mobil 1 ATF. From what I understand, GM says that Dexron VI is compatible with GM vehicles the previously used Dexron III or below. However, when it comes to non-GM vehicles that required Dexron III, they recommend not putting Dexron VI into those systems. It's a weird logic but I go by what they say. However, there are many that have used Dexron VI with no adverse effects reported.

BTW, your steering system also uses the same fluid as specified in the transmission. You may want to consider changing that stuff out while you have the hood open as well.
