I have an Acura TL. They sent me this email. Wondering what you guys think about putting this in the 4Runner. Would it interfere with the Tire Pressure Sensor?

Nitrogren is used in aircraft tires and racing tires because it is less likely to cause a blowout when extreme heat is applied to the tire (the nitrogen does not increase in pressure like normal air does). Also -- the nitrogen will prevent your tire from "rotting" on the inside. The question is --- are there really problems that we need to worry about? Under normal conditions, passenger vehicle tires are not exposed to extreme heat under a heavy load .... and when have you ever had a tire fail because the inside was rotted?

Wouldn't nitrogen obey PV=nRT just like air?

BUT --- (quoted from cartalk website) "The reason nitrogen pressure stays more constant than air pressure is because air contains water vapor, and so it expands less predictably than nitrogen. There's a different percentage of water vapor in the air on any given day (a k a the humidity), so you never know exactly how much tire expansion you'll get from the water vapor. "

I read an article a few months ago (sorry, forget where) that said the only real benefit of using nitrogen is the molecules are larger than standard air molecules. This prevents the nitrogen moleclues from escaping as quickly (= less leakage) so you don't have to check the pressure and refill as often. Proper tire inflation will give you all the "benefits" listed in the sales pitch. So if you check you tire pressure every month or two and keep them filled, there is no real benefit.

They said the "rubber rot" is b.s. and there might be some benefit to keeping the interior of you rims from rusting, but since most rims are now aluminun alloys, and not steel, you don't need to worry about that either.

Unless you're a professional racer who needs to know exactly how tires will perform, I'd chalk this "offer" up to yet more fear-mongering and money-grabbing.

Average people have been putting air in tires for ever, with no ill effects and no major problems (unless they don't put enough in).

When was the last time you heard someone say their tires rotted from the insde? I'm more worried about my tires rotting from the outside thanks to the endless chemicals, salt, water, rocks, and sun they're exposed to.

It is just marketing hype meant to relieve your wallet of your hard earned money.

Plus if you do any offroading and have to lower your tire presures you have no way to replace the 98% nitrogen fill.

Costco fills them up with Nitrogen with any and all purchases.

The only real benefit to them is that they don't leak.. maybe a little... and that means less chance of you driving around with under inflated tires... which causes that premature wear.

I went offroading this pass weekend.. through mud + rocks and my tires are perfectly fine. I didn't deflate them.

I personally wouldn't pay to get nitrogen in the tires.. but if they come with it.. why not.

Also, how are they going to get rid of the air naturally occurring in the inside of the tire volume? I doubt anybody is going to vaccuum and backfill a tire and wheel assembly (assuming the bead won't unseal under a vaccuum).

Its ok to mix the two together..... so they won't need to take out all the air.

Agreed, but the evil air that's full of moisture stays there! I was just trying to point out that you aren't getting pure nitrogen in the tire, its a mix of atmospheric air and the nitrogen.

It's better than air from a compressor I suppose (but not worth paying extra for it).

the "evil" air that we breathe can be dehumidified as well as filtered to remove any oil from a compressor.

If you really REALLY have to have Nitrogen I'll bet that you can buy it cheaper at a welding supply outlet

Wow, that's expensive. We have Michelin's North American Headquarters around here and they offer Nitrogen free in their employee parking lot. The system takes your current PSI down to 4 I think, then fills it up to 40 or so, takes it back down again, then fills it up to whatever you set on the dial.
