Push button 4 wheel drive help

Hey guys, Ive got a 99 Limited 4X4 with 233K on the clock, and love it. I know little about how cars actually work, and on my transfer case I have the 4WD button, I want to know whats the difference between just pushing it in without moving the lever back to 4hi and what each setting means, im a newbie you might say, thanks!
