Just came up with this design for push start along with ACC and ignition switches. Looking to buy the push button from Ebay which has a wide variety of designs and styles. Some include LED lighting which would involve more wiring as you would need to provide power for it. Planning on using rocker switches for the ACC and ignition switches. The ignition switch will also be used to turn the engine off. With this set up you would still need to put the key in and turn it once to unlock the steering wheel. This is also serves as a good theft protection as without it, someone could hop in and press a few buttons and be gone. Also, depending on preference you can either cut the wires and run them straight to the switches (This will mean you can only use the switches to start the truck.) or you can splice into the wires and then be able to use either the switches or key. Here is the set up I have so far. I opened up the dash and used a voltmeter to find out which wires ran to what.

One issue I have found is that both a blue wire and a black/yellow wire read 12v when turned to ignition. There also is another blue wire that is just for ACC. If anyone could help with that, it would be greatly appreciated. Am I correct to assume that if I just cut one of the two wires and run it to my switch it should work?

Let me know what you guys think, I'm open to suggestions.

I think you are a ways from a working circuit. The ignition key is a double pole, triple throw switch. It draws two separate circuits from two different major fuses AM1 40A (the white power wire)and the AM2 30A (white with red stripe). Powering all that from only the one fuse would be a very bad idea.

While the Start push and the ACC rocker could be single throw, single-pole, the ignition switch needs to be a 40A capacity double throw, single-pole switch. That's a mighty big rocker. Your $1.99 special shows no amp rating, but I will guarantee it is NOT safe for the job.

Sorry to rain on your parade. I think you need to use a few relays (four) to do this.

See attached at middle p. 49 (from a 2002, so colors may vary from yours, but the ignition switch circuit is pretty much the same for all years, I believe. There is only one key switch p/n listed for all 3g 4Runner years):

Thanks for the help. I wasn't sure if everything was correct that is why I posted everything on here before I went cutting up my dash. I went ahead and order a start button kit that comes with a relay and everything, so I wont have to worry about the starting portion of it. Now I just need to figure out the relays for the Ignition and ACC.

Well, don't even think about doing this without a copy of the 1997 EWD. Spend the $15 and go on TIS and download it. I wouldn't.

The start switch easy. Just bridge the black/yellow start wire to the white/red wire from the AM2 fuse, NOT the white wire from the AM1 as you have it.

Okay. So if I just connect those two wires to a switch, I would be good to go for the start button?

WAIT! I wasn't done checking. The start wire '99-'02 is a green/black wire. I don't know if that is a match to the black/white that you show. The switch or relay needs to be able to handle at least the full 7.5A load of the Starter circuit (not a problem for a relay.)

This is how the kit says wire it. So would I connect the power to the white/red wire and the start to the black/white wire? What would I connect the ignition wire to then? Sorry for all the questions

Do you have a black/red wire from the key switch at Pin 6 that goes live at the Ignition On key position? That would be my choice. That's the IG2 wire from the same fuse circuit as the Starter feed.

I'll have to check when my mom comes back with the truck. The only two wires I saw before that go live with the ignition is a black/yellow wire and blue wire. I assume the black/yellow must be the color for 97.
 
I was thinking about doing this a few days ago, glad somebody else has started! Definitely subbed for this one!

I see that the 98-02 also have a black/yellow wire. I'll need to go back in and look at the AM2 and see if I can spot anything else

Start circuit should be green/black on Pin 8. Black/yellow is an Ignition On wire on Pin 4 off the AM1 (white wire fuse). In any case, Start wire is whatever is on Pin 8.

As you look at the key plug connector with the catch on top: Pin 1 is top left, Pin 8 is bottom right.

You should have six wires, from Pins 2,3,4,6,7,and 8. 2,3,and 4 are the AM1 circuit, and 6,7,8 are the AM2 circuit. AM1 Power is on Pin 2, Accessory on 3, Ignition #1 on 4. AM2 Power is on Pin 7, Ignition #2 on 6, Start on 8. Match your colors to these Pin numbers and we will have a circuit map for your year. The Pins are the same because the key switch is always the same.

Pin 1: XXX
Pin 2: AM1 Power (white)
Pin 3: Accessory (Blue?)
Pin 4: Ignition #1 (Black/yellow)
Pin 5: XXX
Pin 6: Ignition #2 ( ?)
Pin 7: AM2 Power (White/red??)
Pin 8: Start (Black/White)

OOPS. That doesn't match up at all.

OK. 1997 is obviously very different than what I thought. We really need the '97 EWD to be sure of what we are doing. I'll have to think on this. Did you have the catch on top and look at the Pins of the plug (as opposed to the wires) as you numbered them? because the blank pins should be on the left and I guess you have them on the right.

I even found a '98 EWD in my files and it is the same as '99 and '02. So color me baffled.

Unless you have a system where you can keep the key in your pocket, I think it's pretty pointless.

Yes the catch was on top! Well I know the starter wire is the black and white because it is at 0 volts when the key is the ignition 2 clicks to the right. Then when I turn the motor over it goes to 12 volts. So I'm good with the start wire. I'll use that one to connect to the relay. I'm also positive that the white is power. So that will be able to provide power for the relay and button. The only thing that I'm iffy on is the ignition. Which I have found two wires for, the black/yellow (pin 1) and the blue wire (pin 6). Since power is pin 3, I feel that the pin 1 ignition would be the best to connect to. But what do I know lol.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Why have a system where you put the key in and then have more steps to start the truck than stock? Other than of course "because i can".
