Put in 5.5, got out 4.0

So I'm using oil. Here are the stats. 07 v6 4wd sr5. Mobil1 5w-30. 10,000 mile OCI 170,000 on the ODO .

Anyway, changed the oil today and only got back 4 quarts of the 5.5 I put in. Now one jackals move on my part. I never check my oil. From now on I'll check it every 1k or so.

So the question is whether or not using 1.5 quarts over 10k miles is a big deal or not. I mean I realize I'm going to lose some past the rings...

Rig runs great. No smoke. Etc...

I would say that is a lot. But you should verify the amount with frequent testing before assuming the worst. If you went to a more typical 5000 oci that would be less than a quart per oci, and many people will drive a car like that for years.

That's really not bad. For reference, most vehicle manufacturers don't even warranty engines for oil burning until they burn 1qt per 1,000 miles. (not that I think that's ok, but that's what they do)

I would make sure your PCV is ok, maybe just change it out since they're cheap. After that just check it every few thousand miles and dont worry about it.

If you really wanna know what's going on with your oil you can send a sample to Blackstock labs next oil change.

Well I accounted for the filter. BUT I just realized my pcv valve has 10k on it. Maybe Imma go change it. I think for the next few oil changes I will pull it back to very 5k and see what happens.

Why not leave the OCI at 10000 since you are using synthetic? As you check it and it is low you will add fresh oil to the mix. I did this on a Mustang GT that had forged pistons and used a quart about every 2500 miles since new. Fortunately, it had an indicator that let me know when it was exactly a quart down. After warranty was up, I went to 10k OCI. The car was driven hard daily, autocrossed, and was literally falling apart by the time I got rid of it with over 225,000 miles on it. But the engine was perfect, clean inside, no sludge, no tapping, no smoke and never increased oil usage.

I hear you. I'm gonna put a new pcv valve in it and keep an eye on it. If all is well at 5k I may just keep my oci

sounds about right, with 10,000mi on the oil its lost viscosity and it pretty thin allowing some squeeze.

i feel uncomfortable at 5,000mi intervals, even on a full SYN.

try to check the oil every 3,000mi, adding if needed, with your current problem you want to see consistency regardless if its new or old oil that means you should see an average loss of about .50 Qt. each check.

lets say you frequently check and loss is minimal for the first 6k then from 7k-10k you notice it consumes a lot more, that would let me know the oil is dead @ about 7k and i should lower my oil change interval.
