Putting a 302 in my 1995 4Runner

I made a little bit of progress. I got my wiring harness down to just these wires.
Not sure if I have everything I need, but saved the rest of the harness for just in case.

Well, NWOR never gave me a call back today, and they won't answer the phone. :dammit:

I guess this means it's time to start finding places to get my two missing parts. I'm hoping I can get the stock Toyota slave cylinder to work, and I'm sure there is someone in the PNW with odd size pilot bushings. I'll continue calling them while I'm looking for alternatives, but it seems like I would have an easier time winning the lottery then getting them to admit they screwed up.

Went to go put my engine in today so I could at least get the mounting brackets in place, and see where the engine will sit. I then realized the NWOR sent me the wrong bellhousing. I think they sent me one for a W56/W59 instead of the one for the R150F. Didn't notice until I went to mount it to the transmission, and nothing lined up.

Well S#%*. That sucks. Especially considering the problems you had so far. :frusty:

I would do thorough measuring BEFORE lifting the engine in place to make sure the engine mounts fit, too. On mine, if used as they directed, would've put the engine practically in the passenger area! I had to turn them around backwards and install on the opposite side of the engine so they moved it forward instead of backward. They're beefy mounts, no doubt, but check them over closely before breaking out the hoist. Also, I had to use some of the original hardware, as NWOR sent nuts that didn't match the bolts (argh!). It would be SOOOO sweet if that guy who runs the place would put someone else in charge, so you could take advantage of the nice parts without the hassles.

Good News! Called them again today and was told that the warehouse is supposed to be sending me my missing slave cylinder and pilot bushing.

Also told them about the bellhousing problem, and after they tried to tell me I must not have a V6 transmission in my 4Runner they gave me an email address to send a photo to. Sounds like they only check their email once a week though.

I love this project!! If I can get my hands back on my 2nd gen I think I'd go this route. But I think I'd try to find a wrecked mustang with an EFI HO motor. I know it'd be a lot more electrical work than a carbed motor but I like the reliability of EFI.

The eecIV EFI system on Mustang's is pretty easy to work with. I put a '91 Mustang motor into my <cough>Jeep<cough>. Works great!

Wow what pricks! BS all around

Is the 302 a common swap for 4runners? Pretty awesome that you're doing this though. Sucks about the customer service.

I'd like to see a 5.3LS swap. :D

They actually called me back!

After seeing the image I posted on page 2 he admitted that there was a problem, and said it will be taken care of this week.

Using a Chevy engine seems to be a more common swap.

I had to use original hardware to get the mounts on my engine block as well.

how exactly do those motor mounts work? they don't look like they will bolt to the factory spot. and they look NOTHING like my mounts.

although, I got my stuff used, and pretty sure they originally came off an 87.

Wow, some things never change. I had a run in with NWOR way back in the mid 90's, that was all I could take.

Awesome build, following.

Here are the instructions that came with it, and a shot of the mount on my engine. I can't get any better shots right now.

Good to hear they finally called you back, hope they get your order all straightened out and make it right!

I have the same motor mounts, they're built pretty stout, I've been really happy with them so far. I like that they have the slotted holes for adjustment, I had to pull the trans during mockup (I think i was waiting on the pilot bushing from NWOR, lol) and I was able to just loosen the motor mount bolts and slide the engine forward enough to drop the trans.

perfect, thanks. I wasn't seeing the smaller section where it bolted directly to the stock location.

I only asked, because I have had both of my mounts rip off the frame.

im talking the 2 ears, where that mount bolts to. I have had to repair them both.

if I had to do it again, I would cut the 2 ears off, and weld in a 3/16"- 1/4" plate in their place.
well that IS what I have done now, but its something I wish I would have done prior to putting the engine in.
just something to think about.

After over a month of calling NWOR I got a new bellhousing and the rest of my parts.

Tomorrow I'm going to see if this bellhousing will bolt up to the transmission, and hopefully start putting everything together.

Set the engine in today to see how everything lined up. Think I will need to get the factory Ford exhaust manifolds that are straight. Also going to try to get to a u-pull-it tomorrow to get the smaller water pump and everything off an Explorer. Where it sits right now a radiator has no chance of fitting.

We tried flipping the engine mounts around to get the engine in a better position, but no luck. I'm Actually afraid I might have the wrong mounts because mine have 10057 on them, and NWOR's site lists 1056 as the part number I need. 10057 isn't even listed on their site.

The trip to the junkyard was a success today. :becky:

Got brackets, pulleys, power steering pump, and a working alternator from a 1999 Explorer. Ran into some trouble getting the timing cover off, so I decided to order a new timing cover and water pump. A new water pump sounds like a better choice anyways.
