Puzzling squeak

I have a puzzling squeak in my rear wheel. Probably passenger side. Constant, from when I start rolling. Applying brakes does not affect the sound. When I thought it was the driver side, I removed the driver side wheel drum, and the brake shoes on that side had at least 1/8" left on them. So, I think it is something else.

When I jack up the rear from the center, and spin the rear wheels, there is no squeak. What really puzzles me is that both wheels spin (in opposite directions), freely, whether in neutral or park. I thought park would lock both wheels. What is up with that?

Any idea what else I should look into, regarding the squeak?

Park only locks the transmission. Being an open differential, your tires will still be allowed to rotate, as you've seen. If you tried to rotate them both in the same direction at the same time, they wouldn't spin.


I had a squeal that turned out to be the wear indicators on the front brakes. Even though it sounded like it was coming from the rear, it was in fact the front.
 
Thanks very much for the quick reply. Yeah - if I could make them both spin the same direction by myself, I would have tried that. I did think of that. But I was unsure exactly how the differential operated.

I will look at my front brakes. Thing is, I replaced them not that long ago with those "long lasting" EVIL ceramic pads, which I utterly despise, because of the "no brake dust" which requires brake cleaner and a wire brush to remove from my wheels.

Like stated lift all 4 tires and spin them all. If still nothing I would start her up, have someone put it in drive and let the drivetrain roll. See if you can pinpoint it after that. Of coarse be careful when doing this.

Could be a wheel bearing if not brakes or driveshafts.
 
Already replace the failed drive shaft u-joints, so I am pretty sure that is not it. That was an adventure in itself. And a huge learning experience. As well as the $28 starter contact replacement.

Toyota began sucking in about 1999, didn't they? But there is still (some) good in them.

Careful with that talk around these parts... we're die hard believers for the most part.

The thing with Toyotas in the US market is that once they comfortably found a place for the Lexus brand in the US, the Toyota platform equivalents somehow mysteriously began moving downmarket, maybe not in so much in reliability but in other areas like refinement and build quality IMO. Beyond status and a luxury buff there was little reason to buy an ES300 when the Camry was so damn good. Little reason to buy an LX450 when the 80 series had conquered the world. That's why I love the 3rd gen. It had no Lexus badged equivalent, they put everything they knew into it. My other theory (if anyone is still reading) is that when 3rd gen platform was in the design stage in 1992-1994, mechanical computer modelling was still rather primitive and over-design was more common.

They still always was a little behind in tech and refinement. My 86 ford bronco was like a luxury truck. Compare to an 86 4runner.
