Most definitely. It doesn't make sense for Toyota to spend all that money developing and manufacturing the 5th gen and then turn around and pull the plug on it. Even if sales are low, I think the 5th gen will be around for the normal 6-year cycle, probably with a "freshening" somewhere around the 2013 model year.

Another thing that just came to mind----
Direct competitors for the 4Runner are disappearing very quickly. There are very few midsize SUVs remaining that offer body-on-frame construction and a live axle in the rear. Think about how Explorers, Pathfinders, Grand Cherokees, etc...all went either unibody or IRS or both. So I think Toyota might be counting on gaining market share for buyers who still value the durability and strength a full frame and live axle provide. Who knows, maybe the 5th gen will sell better than anyone expects!

Yeah, there is no doubt in my mind that the 4Runner will complete at least one more 6-7 year term. I would be surprised if Toyota would ever drop the 4Runner name from their lineup. Its a staple, just like the Land Cruiser and Corolla are. For example, the FJ Cruiser sells in low volumes, but Toyota continues to offer it for several reasons I'm sure. Even when Pontiac had the Aztek, they still kept it around for a full life-cycle. It typically costs too much money to pull the plug after only a year or two. I think back to the good old days when the 4Runner was one of the hottest SUV's out there. I think with many of its direct competitors being dropped, that the 4Runner will gain in market share/sales. As it stands, I only really consider the Pathfinder and Grand Cherokee competitors. Maybe the LR4, but it is much more expensive. Once, automakers are able to offer high miles per gallon trucks/suvs, I am sure we will see a decline in CUV wagons and an increase in larger truck based vehicles. I would love to see hydrogen combustion engines take off and become mainstream.

Here is probably a more to the point question. What changes do you think Toyota made to the design after $4 a gallon? I know the V8 is gone (for now at least), but is there anything else?

I think the decision to offer a 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder engine and drop the 8 cylinder engine was Toyota's response to $4/gallon gas. Well, that and the crappy economy we've been having for more than a year now.
I don't think the new 5th gen will be any lighter in weight, considering that it is supposedly still a fully boxed frame and live rear axle. And the dimensions are up slightly overall. So it looks like they decided to go with smaller, more efficient engines to offset high gas prices and the terrible economy. Like others have suggested, it's probably mostly a marketing decision, based upon their own marketing research that told them the demand for smaller engine choices would be higher than the demand for larger engine choices.

I dont like the rear cargo area. It reminds me of the bed of the new taco's

A 6sp would get me interested. The V6 is fine. With a little extra high RPM oomph from VVT-II and it should be even better.

I think with each new model, I go back in geneerations that I like most. The reason I like 4Runners are they are small and comfortable, seems they just keep getting bigger and bigger every model. I loved my 4th gen, but I went back to a 2nd gen, and honestly my favorite model is a tie between 3rd and 1st, not digging this 5th gen look, maybe after I see and drive one.

I am still in love with the 3rd gens, but it might be cause that's the last gen available in manual. It took me a while but I like the 4th gens now. I was very close to getting one but they couldn't meet my budget so wife decided on the Rav4. If I were to get a 4Runner, I would still be more interested in a 3rd gen manual. However, if I absolutely must get an automatic vehicle, I would definitely consider the 5th gen before looking for a 4th gen. However, I do like the sliding tray, but only if it were completely removable when I don't need it.
That's not a good thing, IMHO. I carry a Thule cargo box and a Thule fishing rod box on my roof. I want as a long a rack as possible.

man wtf....now they decide trow in a sub in the back usless compartment xD. the wheel fenders are too small for me 
. other than that looks kinda neat like though it looks similar to highlander.....well most toyota suv look the same anyways imo, cept for the new seqoia which look like a bloated 4th gen 4runner.

if toyota wants to keep sales up, they will be price conscious over the new model and make a base 4 cyl 4wd version somewhere in the neighborhood of 26k or less. no manual transmission is painful, but toyota has done away with the MT for anything for the tacos now that the fjc is dead.
i hope that the rear glass can still retract like on the previous generations, loved driving around with the windows and sunroof down.
honestly i hope that the quality is pretty decent on this model, the interior isn't too plasticky, and that it's relatively comfortable. since the land cruiser has bloated into a luxo barge, the 4runner is the last hope toyota has at a decent passenger suv.
i'd like to get one of the first ones off of the assembly line, assuming i like what i see on the test drive. otherwise it's off to the nissan dealer.
hopefully big ass bfgs will fit on it.
