Quasi-official pics of 2010 4Runner

It seems logical that they would have to cut back somewhere to keep the price competitive, but I'm not sure where they are doing the cutting. The 4wd system is more advanced than ever, with the addition of a Select-Trac type system very similar to the one in Land Rovers. They still have the 3 different 4wd systems, including the top-of-the-line Quadradrive II.

I don't know, but maybe they are trying to get back on track by taking less profit on a well-equipped iconic vehicle for the Jeep brand.

A severe financially struggling brand is not going to build something that will offer them less profit...iconic or not. Fiat is not gonna let that happen. BTW, i do believe that the iconic vehicle of the Jeep band is the Wrangler, not GC.

With every new Jeep GC that comes out, you read about how wonderful it is on PAPER. In real life, it is totally different. Take the QDII system. On paper, it is the best thing since slice bread! In reality, the system sucks royal butt! It is no better than your average LSD (maybe even worst if you look at the 1st gen of QDII). It is, at best, for minor off-roading sprints. Maintenance is more than your average differential. Can you name me one manufacturer who has copied Jeep's QD system? None. Yeah, you can argue that copyright protection has something to do with it. Hell, even their own mighty off-roader, Jeep Wrangler, does not use the QuadraDrive II system! Or take their unibody design. On paper, this looks like a winner...good on-road handling, low weight (= better fuel economy), AND crash test protection. (Unibody, in theory, should have superior crash protection vs. a body-on-frame design.) In reality, the JGC is not all that great on-road vs. others in its class. Its unibody has been known to twist and creak like an old man off-road. Its crash test results are far from class-leading. Fuel economy is about average.

In other words, JGC engineering has a lot of bling-bling to it, but does not translate into real-life benefits. So, yeah, a lot of people like yourself have bought into the advertisement and got burned badly by it.

There is ONLY ONE REAL JEEP...the Wrangler. The rest is junk.

No, I'm actually a Toyota Tech. But I really like what I've been learning about the new Grand Cherokee. It seems to be more of what I wanted to see in the 5th gen 4Runner, which is a bit of a disappointment for me so far. I'm holding out hope that I like the Trail Edition. So far, the Limited is not for me based on what I know and I'm not so sure the SR5 would be my cup of tea either. The Trail might be the ONLY 5th gen I'd be even remotely interested in buying.

Maybe I'll be switching to Jeep.... who knows?

I hear you on this. I really like the looks of the new Grand Cherokee...better than the 4Runner from what I have seen. However, I think the reliability history of the 4Runner would still sway me in it's favor opposed to the Jeep. My wife's parents have had Chrysler's for years....they love them despite all of the problems they always seem to have and continue to go back. I don't get it. So for this reason, I still am more prone to giving the 4Runner the nod over the Jeep.

V8's would likely get a bump or hold their value better.

Predictor, Toyota offers a V8 and dumps the 4cyl by June.

God I hope so! Hopefully they will give the Trail edition a leather steering wheel and shift knob as well. Come on Toyota, this isn't a Yaris!

:iagree: V8's will be more desirable to 4Runner enthuiasts. To the average consumer, they probably would fit in the research conclusions Toyota drew leading to the discontinuation of the V8.

Maybe the V8 will appear, but there's no way in hell they are dumping the 4 cylinder by June. Not happening...

You have to think like a businessman, Thai. They are already taking it up butt right now, due to economic conditions and piss poor management, among other factors. Car companies in general will be willing to take less profit now in hopes of generating more profits later. That's just the way the business works. If you don't believe me, look at what GM is doing with their upcoming Chevy Volt. That car is supposed to sell for about $40K and GM will be losing money on each unit sold. Why would they do that when they are already in dire financial trouble? Think about it...

BTW, sure the Wrangler is an iconic Jeep. But so is the Grand Cherokee. There's nothing that say only one vehicle per brand can be iconic.

Maybe you should think about it too...think about the HISTORY of the Grand Cherokee. All bling...nothing worth a damn.

The Volt is a different animal...it is GM's claim to fame in the fuel economy race...just like Toyota lost a bit of money on every Prius that they sold. The Grand Cherokee is neither a breakthrough nor is it Jeep's main seller. It is just another face in the crowd. I think that you're giving Jeep too much credit when history tells you otherwise.
