question about bolt under car

Hey everyone, just bought a '97 manual transmission 4runner 4 cyl with 200k miles. I never owned a Toyota before so I have some learning to do. I was messing around under my car, getting to know it and noticed this weird screw sticking out with a bunch of black grease on it screwed into a bracket that holds the drive line. Its kind of odd that it sticks out so far. Is it supposed to be like that? Any ideas what it is?

It is a transmission mount. It is a top out stop. Supposed to keep the mount from coming on done.

The oil is not normal. your rear tranny seal is probably leaking. You need to replace and pressure wash.

cool thanks, so would you leave it alone then? yeah the black stuff def. isn't oil, its sticky, some sort of grease sealer.

That nasty stuff on your t-case is surely oil...

I would not leave it alone, no.

There's no T-case. That's the transmission, he has a 2wd.

It is leaking gear oil from the transmission output seal. I would definitely replace the seal, inspect the slip yoke for excess wear and replace if necessary, and also inspect the transmission output bushing for excess wear, and replace if needed.

Yeah 2wd, manual transmission....
It doesn't appear to be leaking oil, that stuff isn't oil, but some sticky black sealant type stuff I believe....so you would recommend:
1) replace the transmission output seal
2)inspect slip yoke for excess wear
3)inspect transmission output bushing

Going to have to look up how to do all that. Thanks for getting me started.

Im gonna go out on a limb and say the black gooey stuff is the oil from your transmission breaking the rubber down in the mount.
