Question about brakes 4th gen brake upgrade gone wrong.

Can someone help me relieve my doubts. I went to upgrade my brakes from 4th gen front brakes/rotors to 2010 5th calipers / rotors. Everything went great until I went to bleed the brakesÂ…. The rears went great (upgraded calipers to 5th gen , rotors new 4th gen) then I went to bleed the fronts. Brake pedal goes soft. After many attempts, I covered the fitting going into the caliper with grease and noticed that air escaped from both calipers thru the grease when I tried to bleed the front brakes. One of the calipers had the first thread stripped (shipped that way) figured it would be ok since it was only the first thread. DonÂ’t understand why the other caliper would be leaking tho. So long story short, can someone tell me that the brake fitting (that goes into caliper) are the same from 4th gen to 5th?? I read a couple of threads on the upgrade before doing this and I donÂ’t recall seeing anything about having to change brakes lines.

I don't know for sure but the fittings should be the same, I would take the calipers back to where you bought them and get another set.

I would agree with this. I've done the 5th gen brake upgrade on mine, got all my calipers from RockAuto.com and had zero issues. Fittings were standard between my original calipers and the 14WA calipers.

I didn't go with a kit. I literally ordered the front brake calipers for a 2010 4Runner and stuck with new rear calipers for my 2003 from RockAuto.com. I got brake pads and EBC rotors off Amazon and already had braided brake lines installed.

It doesn't take a kit to do the brake upgrade to the 5th gen calipers, it takes knowledge and a little shopping. Make your own kit with parts you know are going to work.

Sorry I should have clarified, I just meant which combo of calipers, rotors, and pads you went with haha. Thanks for the info! I am planning to do the 5th gen upgrade sooner than later here.

14WA front calipers, which are standard for 2010-2015 4Runners (Think I have those dates right).

Rear calipers are stock replacement for 2003-2009, the later model rears are not an upgrade.

Akebono ceramic brake pads. The below links are correct, however they seem to have the pics swapped for front and rear.

Here are the calipers I used:

Front calipers are 2010-15 4Runner 14WA PowerStop remans.

Front left - More Information for POWER STOP L6279
Front right - More Information for POWER STOP L6278

Rear calipers are also PowerStop remans but stock replacements for the 2003-09 4Runner.

Rear left - More Information for POWER STOP L2727
Rear right - More Information for POWER STOP L2726

To convert all the rubber brake lines over to braided lines, you have to use several sources. I got the body to axle center brake lines from metaltech4x4 - 4Runner & FJ Cruiser Extended Stainless-Steel Brake Lines

The wheel well brake lines I got from Crown Performance. They have kits for stock to 3" or 4" lifts - https://www.crownperformance.com/4runner/

The rear calipers have a rubber line from the axle to the caliper. StopTech makes braided lines to replace those - https://www.amazon.com/StopTech-950-44507-Stainless-Steel-Braided/dp/B003K3NBPA
