Question about Hidden Keys

Hello

I have a '17 TRD Off-road Premium. It has a normal key with remote. I'm looking at places to stick a key on the underside.

Are there any places to void and that may trigger the RF ID of the key to read as in or near the vehicle?

FWIW I keep an ignition key hid inside the vehicle and hide a door lock only key outside.
I make sure they're both difficult to find.

Check out the hitch safe. It fits in the hitch receiver and has a locking door. I've used one for about 10 years. Works great.

Only the key with remote foot lol buttons have a battery. The non remote key cant be taken apart.

I like the idea of hiding two keys. That way if someone finds the door only key they can't automatically drive the car off.

I looked at these a few years back. I do use my hutch for a bike rack in the summer. How easy is it to take in and out?

How has yours stood up to road dirt and wear and tear?

It is very easy to remove. It takes like 10 seconds. Mine has held up very well over the past 10 years. It has been through lots of bad weather and car washes. Car washes tend to knock the rubber cap off, so I started removing the entire safe before driving through a car wash.

I keep the valet key in it all the time in case I lose the key with the remote. I also use it to hold my key with the remote when I go on a bike ride or run and don't want to carry the key with me. I normally put bikes inside the truck, rather than on an external carrier. I don't use the hitch for anything other than the safe the vast majority of the time.

I'd second the hitch safe as well. I've got one and it does the job just fine.

Removing it is pretty quick and easy, just unlock the safe tray, remove it, and then reach in to slip out the two spring clips that hold in the mounting pins. Once those come out the whole thing is removable. Takes seconds to go in and out.

Mine recently had an inadvertent meeting with the front bumper of a distracted driver's vehicle at a stop sign. Scuffed up the rubber cover but the safe is fine.

2013 Trail here. Not sure about the Limited, but does not have push button start, you need the key to unlock the steering wheel.

I took my key to a Home Depot, they make a bare metal copy key, with no promises. Then I put it in one of those magnetic mounts. This way you can unlock the door but you still can't start it. But to be honest, I always lock the doors with the key, so I have never been locked out of this car to begin with. If I loose the keys, I am screwed; if I am going out of town, I grab the second key out of the house (wife has the valet key).

Going by memory, I think you can get the accessories on (that is, the stereo) with the simple metal key too, and the AC outlets. So you don't have to worry somebody is just gonna jump right in and drive it away.

I suppose if they know what they are doing, or point a gun in your face, they gonna get the 4runner anyways. I have insurance for that, and its not a Lexus.

OK, so I'm reviving this old thread because I'm preparing for a month-long trip and needed a way to be sure I don't get locked out of the 4R. So, I went to my local Toyota dealer and for $14 they made me 2 non-chipped keys. One will go in a buddy's rig and the other will be cable-zipped under the truck, well-hidden and hard to reach. A valet key will also be well-hidden inside so I can start and drive the truck if the main key is completely lost or destroyed. Just another advantage of not having a vehicle with keyless fob and remote start!
