Question after lift

So I did a SS 1.2 lift on my 2002 4runner. I also did the LR upper control arms. Getting on the highway yesterday and today has a long right turn followed by a long left. Going about 35ish I get the traction control light on both turns

Is this normal on a lifted 4Runner or is this a sign I messed up a wire or a more serious problem?

Thanks in advance for the replys

Did you get it aligned after you installed the lift? The same thing will happen on my 4runner if it's out of alignment. Happened after I installed my lift, anytime I've made adjustments to my LR UCA, & after installing my LBJ/OTR/ITR. After getting it aligned, it still occurs occasionally but only if I'm going around a curve a little too fast...but then I again, there hasn't been an alignment shop that has been able to get my alignment within factory spec at this point.

Yes I got it aligned right after the lift. Goodyear I don't think did a good job so trying to find another company to get it aligned. Might have to drop it off again because for $110 and not being done right is annoying. How is Hot Lanta. I grew up in Marietta but haven't been back in about 10 years.

I would definitely take it back there if the alignment wasn't done right. I'm sure Hot Lanta is hot, it's miserable over here in Alabama...

Did you get a before and after printout? If not most modern machines save them automatically. Go request it and upload a picture of it.

Aside from the suffocating heat and humidity, Atlanta's been great. I grew up in Marietta as well but moved to Atlanta after finishing up with school/grad school.

I can understand your frustration about the alignment...seems to be a pretty common issue. I've taken my 4runner to a few different firestones and the only thing they seem to adjust is the toe. Since you grew up in Marietta you might be familiar with Butler Tire. They're supposed to specialize in lowered/lifted cars and they weren't able to get it to factory specs either. Although they did seem to get it closer to the specified ranges. I'm sure a lot has to do with the person that is actually doing the alignment.

Thanks for the responses. Im going to bring the truck back in the morning and see if one of the more experienced guys can get it. I figured with the new upper control arms it should be easy to align properly. Also I do have the print out at home ill snap a picture and upload it. While driving to lunch you have to keep the wheel slightly right which is annoying.

Yeah I remember Butler. Did you do new upper control arms? trying to remember if any of the shops did lifted vehicles but back then I had a 89 s-10 with nothing done to it. Im heading back to the south next week for July 4th. Looking forward to it minus the heat.

I guess my question still stands. If the alignment is good is it normal to get the traction control buzzer and light after a lift? the only thing I can think of is the raised center of gravity messes something up in the sensor or I messed up a wire while putting it in. I just don't want the computer to try and apply brakes while in a turn do to the traction control thing.

Sure did. Measured about 4 times and the rear is all centered up. would that make the light come on during a turn? Ill measure it again on the truck and make sure it is the correct length.

your alignment is probably fine. the traction control light comes on because it senses a change in yaw of the truck. unfortunately it cannot detect the difference between yaw and lean, and wheb you turn left or right the truck thinks its going the wrong way and freaks out.

you can also try doing a zero point calibration or do the andys mod 2.0 so that you can disable the traction control.

I drive around with no sway bars and it used to come on all the time, so i drive with it disabled around town and enable it when i need it on the trail.

also as far as the alignment, the factory spec for caster is not attainable if you have stock ucas, if you have after market ucas then the alignment shop should be able to get you within spec, unless you have worn out or damaged components that can affect the alignment, tie rod ends, steering rack bushings, control arm bushings.

After the lift I had them align it and the caster was out. In Hawaii when you lift the vehicle your alignment has to be with in factory specs. That lead me to buy the LR UCA. order and got it installed. Went Back to get it aligned and they couldn't get the tie rod to move even though they did it the week prior and got that part in. So didn't drive the truck and got new inner and outer tie rods from camelback Toyota. Installed and went back to get it aligned. Now the steering wheel is ajar to the right. so going to bring it back and hopefully a more experienced guy will be there. So I guess the traction control thing is something I will just live with and looks like the andymod is in my future. Plus I guess I can have a little more fun with it.

Yes I have the LR UCA. When I installed my UCA several months ago, I called a few different alignment shops to see if they were able/willing to make adjustments to the LR UCA when doing my alignment & the responses I got were either 'no' or they had no idea what I was talking about. So i played around with the UCA setting's myself & I found that at the "E" setting, I was able to get my caster in the 2.3-2.7 range. Don't remember what my caster numbers were on the "D" setting but I do remember having occasional issues with the back of my driver side front tire rubbing the back of my wheel well. Having it on the "E" setting allowed me to get my caster within spec and fixed the occasional rubbing issue. I am currently in the process of researching a DIY alignment method in hopes that I can get it as "aligned" as possible myself then taking it back to an alignment shop for fine tuning and to get the printout of my measurements.

As far as your question regarding the traction control warning, I have noticed that when my alignment was closer to the recommended specs, I never had the traction control warning come on (& this is with the same driving conditions w/ a 3 inch lift). The more my truck is out of alignment, such as after I installed my lift or after installing my LBJ/OTR/ITR, my traction control warning would sound off a lot more frequently.

How much I mess with suspension I signed up for Firestone ads and go in and buy the lifetime alignment when I get an email. I got one for 129$ for my integra and 149$ for the 4runner.

This has nothing to do with the alignment. Calibrate your traction control, I've had the same thing happen since like D Farms eluded to you have more body roll going on now.

heres the print out

so camber is still out on individual left. but the over all in the middle is good.

seems like they didnt do shit except adjust the toe. I would take it back and tell them specifically that all of the numbers should be within spec. there is no excuse for that shitty camber. basically the cross toe is the only cross number that matters. the camber should be basically 0 as should the toe. the caster is less important and should be adjusted last. from what absalom told me, the tech should most the front cam all the way in and the rear cam all the way out, then adjust the camber with the upper control arm settings, then tighten down the upper control arm, and go back and mess with the adjsutment on the steering rack and the lower cams. if theh cant do this ask for a refund. my lca bushings had completely rotted out and they were still able to get my truck in relatively good alignment, with what you have there is no excuse.

So did the Zero calibration and it seemed to have fixed it. Was a ltle confused but figured it out. The diagram was reveresed from what was in mine but over all pretty easy. ill try the on ramp but trying to get it to go off i had no luck. still going to bring the truck in for an alignment since it doesn't seem to be done correctly. Thanks for all the reply and aiding me on getting this fixed.

So brought the truck back in for alignment and talked with a more experienced mechanics about hot to adjust caster and camber. We determined that i need to add 1 to the caster. He said he would have to charge me labor to make the adjust and so not willing to do that i brought it home jacked it up and changed the ball joints to the c setting on both sides and i pulled the bolt all the way out to have chamber out the most possible. it took about 10 min to do. Went back up and im guessing he supervised the guy doing the alignment called back in 2 hours and everything is back to factory specs. so thats good. now im going to see if the zero calibration fixed the traction control thing. if not i guess it will be something i have to live with
