Question:Electrical Sending Unit (Transmission Gauge)

Hey Forum,
I am trying to figure this out. I will be doing a Transmission Temperature Gauge (electric) and got to the part with the sending unit. Does it only need one wire, from the sending unit, then to the gauge? OR does it need a ground as well?
The gauge has three prongs on it, a Ground, a Positive and a sending unit prong. Is it as simple as it is?

You ground the gauge under the dash and ground the sender under the hood.

So coming out (from the sender) is two wires, one ground, and the other to the gauge correct?
