Question on Paint For Roof Rails

So, those of you that powder coated; what did you do to remove them & reinstall them to insure a legit seal so they wouldn't leak?

you remove the metal rails from the feet. there are two button head torx screws on each end. once removed you have just the rails to do whatever you would like with.

You can easily dent the roof panel by prying the rail cap covers off if you are not careful. Even with the curve of the roof it will dent ridiculously easily. I read the warnings and pictures found in here before I popped mine off to remove the cross bars.

Just so I'm clear. I'm not undoing anything from the roof actually where there will temporarily be holes in the top to allow water in or holes I have to seal afterwards? The rails are mounted to feet under the caps?

The torx screws are visible underneath the rails with the caps on, but you can not remove the rails without removing the feet. this is the case as there's about 1.5" from the foot which extends into the rail on each side which is what screws go into. If you remove the feet and reinstall that is all you have to do no need to worry about water intrusion. would it be a good idea to put a little sealant on the bolts, sure. that's easy and inexpensive insurance.

If you paint your self there should be no issue getting it done within one day and back on.

I pulled the trigger on the powder coating and returned all the aerosol paint. I ended up finding a great powder coating place here in St. Louis. They quoted me $125 so I pulled the trigger. They called me today to tell me they were ready to pick up AND that when they quoted me they thought it was a whole roof rack, not just the rails, so the cost would be $25, not $125. The rails look great - I'll post a pick when I get them reinstalled (hopefully this weekend).
