Question on wheel offset

TOYOTA 09

Looking to get a set up wheels that stick out a little further. I went with -6mm offset wheels on my 2009 Tacoma....anyone running offset wheels? If so, what offset and do you have pictures? I really like the look of the new TRD Pro wheels in grey but they are not offset...maybe just get spacers?

Also just to make sure when buying aftermarket wheels I want:

4.5 backspacing
6 on 5.5
17x9
17x8
17x7

Edited for more info added:

Will be running 270/75/17

Right?

Your backspacing will be a product of the wheel width and offset, offset being how far the hub mounting surface is inside or outside the center line of the wheel.

6 on 5.5"(139.7mm) is the correct bolt pattern.

There is no end all/be all wheel width. Wheel width will be a function of your tire size and you didn't mention what tire is going on this thing. If you shop for tires on line you'll notice in the specifications table, a range of wheel widths recommended for that specific tire size. You can go wider or narrower than recommended, but some shops may refuse to install for you.

You should take a look at this LINK to get a better idea of what you're dealing with when it comes to wheels.

the most aggressive wheel size I commonly see on the 5th gen forum is 9" wide -12 offset. there will probably be some rubbing.

-10 at stock height rubs. I trimmed. Then lifted.

Thanks guys I'm looking for a wheel tire combo that will be slightly stuck out past the fenders. I would like to go up to 270/70/17 for tire size, but but stay at stock tire size if needed.

I guess the big question is should I just get a version of the trd wheels and add some spacers....or get offset wheels?

Do you plan to lift it or run stock ride height?

Like others mentioned, both width, offset and tire size are important. Backspacing is just another way to view offset. It focuses on the wheel to suspension clearance and the max for the 5th gen is ~4.5".

I feel the ideal aftermarket wheel for the 5th gen is a 17x8 with 0 offset. That will let you run the largest possible tires without much rubbing. Anymore negative offset via rim width or decreased backspacing/spacers, and you will have more rubbing potential. It gives the truck a better stance than stock, but nothing extreme.

A 17x9 with -10 offset is probably about as aggressive as you can go, but will probably require a body mount chop and rubbing at full stuff even with a lift... The 270 might work with a 9" -10, hard to say, most people are trying to run bigger tires for offroad performance.

Lookin' at it last night, sits flush with top of the fender. These are -10ET 4.5'' BS

These are 18x9 with -12mm offset. (Tires are 265/70.) I had to lift it to stop the rubbing, but did not have to chop the body mount.

The best thing to do would be to hit the "Search this Forum" button at the top right of the page, and type in *build thread", to have a look at all the 5th gen builds, which are quite good. There are more pictures of more different wheel and tire combinations in these build threads than I can count. That way you can see what you like and don't like, and what the specs of the wheel are.

if those are 17x8 with -10 offset, they are not 4.5" backspacing. Not that it matters, just clarifying.

A 285/70 would hang out of the fender quite a bit more.

Stressing Wheels Offset

Hi everyone!

I am actually stressed after asking around and making some research regarding how much offset would be ok, within limits etc. The fun part is I began doing all this after I had already got my new wheels.

I´m a newby in all this so I trusted the mechanic and didn´t made any thinking about the wheels I was getting and ended up with a -44 offset 17 x 10 (or 9?).
With tires I already had, bridgestone dueler M/T 285/70/17. (love them)

People tell me it looks great, I´m not really sure though... So I had been thinking of getting some flares or something regarding all the dirt I am getting everywhere till I realized the size could be stressing the suspension, joints and god knows what else.

I´ve been looking everywhere for answers and hadn´t found much.

My truck is a 2001 4runner (i think its limited) with an IronMan suspension kit with a 2.5" lift. 285/70/17 tires and this huge iron 17x10 wheels with -44 offset.

Hope to hear any advice, hopefully logical enough to help other people going under similar situation including people choosing their wheels and tires without considering the offset as I did.

Thanks and Cheers!
