Questions - USB Rechargeable Work light / Flashlight / Torch

Before we got our '15 4Runner Limited we also looked at the Jeep Grand Cherokee. There were many many neat things it had including the option to roll over you if not placed into Park correctly. One thing that I did think was very useful was an integrated flashlight in the rear cargo rear. It charged off the car so it would never require batteries. It was also smartly designed into the rear body work as to not scream 'Break in and steal me'.

I do carry an LED MagLite in the glove box, but it requires batteries. I do check it from time to time, but with my luck when I need it the AAs will be dead.

This got me to thinking. What other options are our there that I could put in the cargo area for a rechargeable light?

I've toyed with the idea of rock lights, 12v LED strip lighting and so on. This options seem rather involved and seem to get expensive quick.

My Father has the Anker USB rechargeable flash light and likes it. There are seem to be a plethora of shapes, sizes and prices out there.

For myself I'm thinking:
Something the can live under the sliding deck or in the cubby just in front of the sliding deck.
USB charging and no custom cables or connectors.
Bright enough to help change a tire at tire or flag down help, but it doesn't need to burn someones retina's out.
The cheaper the better, not the cheapest POS, because 90% of the time it will be doing doing, but taking up space in the trunk.

For the install I'm thinking of just using a 2-4 port UBS adaptor in the trunk 12v socket. Probably something from Anker. I currently have several of their 12v-USB adaptors and they work great. Also add Anker USB cables to reach were ever the light is stored. I am a little worried about it getting broken with Costco crap moving around or eaten by our dog. I haven't removed the wheel well cover yet. Would it be easy to splice in another socket inside the cover?


Any thoughts on light and installation options?

Doesn't quite fit your criteria, but it's more handy than a flashlight. Got it for $29 in Costco. It does need its own AC adapter though, but you can charge it in the trunk.

Not USB, but 12v charging. I have an emergency jump start unit that has built-in flashlight and USB ports for charging a phone. It's three in one, jump starter, flashlight and USB battery pack.

There are literally scores of USB rechargeable flashlights out there. My flashlight and headlamp are all USB as well as my kids/wife. I love mine, never worry about batteries and can be charged anywhere your truck is. I also have a battery jump as indicated above and have a few battery packs. Helps keep all the devices charged. Phones, tablets, flashlights, gps receiver etc

The issue is there are to many options out there. The only thing I haven't found is a rechargeable USB toilet. I was just hoping to narrow down the search

This one looks interesting. They also make a larger model with a stand. Super glue a small magnet to one side and it could stick any where.

I've had an earlier version of this light in my last few vehicles, charges off the cig lighter and is useful in a pinch for quick lighting. This one looks a bit bigger, may have to upgrade at some point.

It does, but the socket is not live all the time. You have to press a button to activate the plug.

I would like something that charges 'automatically' when I'm driving.

Here is what I got ans I love them. They were $15 on Amazon Prime. They are super bright and have 2 levels of light. The red/blue flasher is a great touch too. The magnets are inset so it will stick to the body work and not scratch it. You can use it as an emergency power bank.

The only issue is I couldn't use my factory Samsung S7 cable to charge it. All my aftermarket cables worked, the OEM Samsung cables have a connection that is a tad shorter and won't make contact.

I have a rechargeable shop light plugged into the cargo area 12V port and then the light lives in the cubby on the passenger side along with my jumper cables and first aid kit.

USB rechargeable. Strobes. Multi lumen settings. And does Amber and Blue/Red. Also is magnetic so I can stick it to things while I am working on the car or anywhere. So far so good for being such a cheap light. Only gripe is that I need to cycle through the light styles to get to the amber setting which I use while I am in the tent at night.

I have a Streamlight Strion in the back of mine. The charger has a 110v cable, and a 12v power connector. It stays connected to the 12v port.

I just recently picked up a Milwaukee Rover usb rechargeable light. Provides a good amount of light for the size.
