Quick IFS Diff Advice

Hey All.

I'm planning on regearing my IFS. The truck has the 'ADD' diff 4.10's. I did a manual hub conversion a while ago. Does it matter whether I put an ADD/non-ADD 4.56 / 4.88 in its place? Are things the same? Advice?

If you already did the manual hub swap then you can get any front diff, preferably the 4.88 from the 3rd gen tow package 4runner. Just swap out the passenger side axle housing and you're set.

As long as you stick with a first or second gen donor, it won't matter, they're identical. ADD or not won't matter either - if you put an ADD diff in, you can swap out the diff tube or just lock the shift forks in place. If you've already done a manual hub conversion on an ADD truck, you can put a non-ADD diff into the truck with no difficulties.

A third gen IFS diff will not swap straight into your truck, although you can reuse the ring and pinion and have them set up in your diff.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure I used a front diff from a 3rd gen in my 88 4runner for the 4.88. The only thing I swapped out was the long axle tube that had the ADD part on it.

I will bet you dinner at the Moab Brewery that you didn't ... the front diff went to a clamshell design with a drivers side drop in 1996.

You're right, they are a driver drop. Maybe it was a tow package specific to the 95 4runners that used the 4.88 diffs? It's hard for me to remember, that was a while ago when I did that swap.

So, which year 4Runners shared the ADD axle layout?

I have a 95 and want to get rid of the ADD, the two shafts, the tube, etc...

The ADD/non-ADD diffs are the same, it's just the extension housing that's different.

I may just go the Solid Axle Swap route. I'd like to have a capable rig, and I like toyota straight axles a lot more than ifs. I missed out on Easter Jeep Safari, and now I want my Toyota big so it can be twice as awesome next year.
