Quick question about stuck 2 of 4 pistons in brake caliper.

Hi guys .

As I have pulsing on my brake pedal and braking is not anymore smooth a I did little maintenance.

I removed caliper and pistons greased everything using a brake grease synthetic.

The thing is my passenger side went well, no problems to remove pistons.
Driver side I've got 2 pistons stuck (upper)
I had to use my vise grip and 2 pry bars to remove them. There was not much rust. I tried cleaned up everything as much is possible than put lots of grease on seals ,piston and piston boot than resembled everything back.

Does this job make sense if they were already stuck?
These calipers are 1.5 year old and I did about 15000 miles on it

If they're stuck, they're stuck. You're probably going to have to replace the caliper or rebuild it with new pistons.

Yeah you right buddy.

Just put the calipers back, I bleed brakes and brakes are still pulsing . I'm gonna replace driver side caliper only as I've got 2 pistons stuck on it.

should i go with oem or the ones from NAPA ?

OEM will cost an arm and a leg and they didn't last long enough to warrant the extra money. I went with rebuilt ones when I replaced all mine. NAPA would probably be good enough.

This is annoying.
Every 2 years most of the people must get the new set of calipers. Can't understand why toyota decide to put such a bad brakes on their cars

If you flush the brake system periodically it will lower the chances of pistons seizing. Brake fluid absorbs moisture, and since brake fluid doesn't circulate all that moisture stays in the caliper.

calipers fail under the 2 year mark. so unless you are swapping fluid every six months you are never going to be in the good with these Toyota calipers. I have been pissed off enough to beat the piston back into the caliper when it is frozen, while on the truck still. then just replace the pads, and go jam on the brakes to get it to pop out. it works for about 18 months of driving before the piston get's seized again. Oh Joy.

Maybe i just happen to be the lucky one, but i have been driving my 02 for 10 yrs. without ever having a problem with the calipers. I did have a problem with build up on the rotors, or as some say warpage, and recently did the 231 up grade just because i wanted the better braking. I went with the power slot drilled & slotted rotors, so i will see how that works out. Are the guys that are having pistons freeze up doing water crossings or using spray on wheel cleaners regularly? Just curious.

I'll jump into this thread.

After reading about stuck calipers, I decided to check the brakes. The right rear had been squeaking a little bit, so I knew it was time to do something.

I ordered Power Stop rotors/pads and SS brake lines from RockAuto, great deal. I bought 4 calipers from NAPA, Napa because they have a black coating which looks nice. Thought only the passenger rear was frozen, glad I went ahead and got all 4 calipers.

Pass Front, 2 frozen pistons on one side.
Driver front 1 frozen piston
Driver Rear pretty darn close to frozen
pass rear, best one on the car, but since I replaced three, went ahead and did this one.

Drained fluid completely, and refilled.

Stops like a dream now!!

With doing all brakes, replacing pass front axel, changing all diff and transfer oils, plus helping with kids and many other family interuptions. Took me I would guess 12 hours this weekend.

I think I'll try to bleed brakes every 6 months after I get new calipers. When I was working on the old ones I've noticed inside the caliper fluid with some "dust" I think that might causing a problems

I have decided to rebuild my 2 calipers on thefront. I've got rebulid kit for 60$ from the dealer

New calipers are 120-150 $ each here in edmonton. Rd build will cost me 60 plus couple beers

How much are reman calipers there after turning in core? Was $60 for a reman caliper here!

They quoted me 120-150 for each rebulid calipers if I bring the old ones back.
so 2 calipers about 240 CAD $
I paid 60 $ for rebulid kit witch include parts for both calipers. I'm gonna rebulid them by myself so that cheapest way I can go
