quick question....filling diff fluid

Do you fill the rear diff until it starts to come out if fill hole? Damn thing took 2.5 quarts before it weeped out. Is that about right?

According to Alldata, the rear on my 2005 has a total capacity of 3.2qt. It also says that the oil level should be within 5mm of the lower surface of the opening, so if you filled it to that point I would think it's fine.

The transfer case takes diff fluid also? Got about 1.7 qt in there

I filled all of mine until they were weeping. Since I was pumping kind of fast and the oil is very viscous I left the fill plugs open for a couple of minutes so it could weep all they wanted and then closed them up.

This is correct. However, it's damn near impossible to determine if you're 3mm-5mm below the fill plug.

Had to cut the dam skid plates off to get the front diff. The PO never bothered getting the works at a car wash apparently with the underbody wash.

Those 10mm inverted hex plugs were a PITA!

anything wrong running without skid plates? I'll pick some at the junkyard in the spring. Will it affect mpg? Airflow thru radiator?

And one more thing...... the rear diff was under a slight vacuum or positive pressure when i removed the fill plug. It was like PSSSST.

Aren't diffs vented to atmosphere?

Believe there's a rear diff vent valve. Don't know where it is.

Can't believe you cut your skid plates off...I'm thinking if you couldn't get your skid plates off, how the hell did you get the front diff fill bolt off. Search "diff bolt" and you'll see many people have had difficulties getting that bolt off -- me included.

Additionally, your 4Runner only has 54K miles. Do you have rust issues?

There is a vent on top of the axle. It looks like a little (3/8" diameter) cap that usually is loose and wobbly. I would bet that it is clogged and needs to be replaced. If the diff can't breath, it can force gear oil out passed the axle seals.

You might as well extend it while you are at it.
