Quick Tire Question

I've read and searched all over the place. So much good info, but not a real clear answer for what size will fit w/ or w/ lifts and spacers. Everybody has a different set up and such.
I just want to confirm what I think I've found.

I'm on my way to buy a 2005 Sport 4x4 V8 today. It's stock I'm sure and I'll be looking to get bigger/better tires.

Biggest that will fit stock: 265/70/17??

I like the 3/2 spacers that are avail, but they won't help ground clearance right?

I have no expereience with any of this, the following is a summary of my understanding based on what I have read here.

In general 265/70R17 fit with little or minor rubbing. 255/75R17 are tighter but still seem to fit with little or minor rubbing. I would expect going over bumps, especially with the wheel turned to rub a little, but probably not enough to matter.

Spacer lift will improve ground clearance under the front diff and body, but not under the rear diff. The front diff is about an inch lower than the rear diff, so that is ok. The spacers will improve your approach, departure and ramp breakover angles.

Just to be clear, wheel spacers will not improve ground clearance, and generally seem to cause more rubbing problems with the fender liner (although if you go wider than 265 tire, they help with UCA rubbing.)

I just put 265/70/17 LTX on my 06 sport and to be honest have not seen a decrease in mileage? I am sure there is some but its small enough not to notice.

I also have no problems with rubbing and I have no lift on.

I also just put Revo's 265/70/17 on my 07 Sport and have not experienced any rubbing. Just having trouble with my Tire pressure light. I keep you posted about gas milage in a few weeks.

You should have absolutely no trouble with 265/70/17's on a stock setup. I ran that size for a few years with no problems. I think that's the size that should come from the factory anyway.
I have since added the 2.5/1.5 daystar and have gone up to 285/70/17's. If you do that, you will have to do some trimming, but it's really not that big of a deal. I didn't notice any mpg difference with the 265's, but it did drop a few after I got the lift...but it just looks so awesome that I don't really care.
Yes, you're right, the spacer lift won't increase ground clearance, but having the ability to run bigger tires will.

You will have to recalibrate the speedometer before you can figure an accurate gas mileage. The tire circumference shouldn't affect mileage. The mileage difference is going to be from the speedometer being 3.3% off now. When actual speed is 60, the speedometer is going to be reading 58, so mileage isn't going to be accurate using the odometer until it's recalibrated.

Everything else being equal, a taller tire will imrpove your gas milage by effectively raising your overall gearing. In practice, all things are not equal. The taller tire probably weighs more, lowering gas milage, and added rolling resistance will lower gas milage. In the end you probably break even going to a 265/70R17.

A spacer lift (as opposed to a wheel spacer) will improve ground clearance since it raises the lowest parts of the vehicle.

I put 265/70/17 Revo's on a year ago. I don't have a lift, I have zero rubbing issues. However, I took a 10% hit on mileage. I lost 40 miles per tank. I have not recalibrated the speedo, but I do run 39 pounds of pressure which helps. As does keeping it on the closer side of 60 vs 70+mph.

I can report the same results after 2000 miles on a new set of Revo 2s. No lift and no rubbing with the larger 265/70/17 size.

Coming from Michelin Cross Terrains, I was surpised how smooth the ride is with AT tires. I was expecting a larger difference.

My mileage has also decreased by approximately 10 - 15% with the larger AT tire.

I'm working on getting 2" spacer on frt and 1.5 on rear. I don't want to go any higher and no larger w/ the tires so my MPG isn't affect anymore. I'm already running 265/70/17 and after k & N and took out the charcoal filter, it read average of 22 on highway...has dropped w/ in town driving.

Since installing my revo 2's 265/70/17 I read estimated gas distance is at 332. Before I was reading estimated at mid four hundreds. If this is right is seems like a big difference, any word on this?

That seems like a big difference too me. I was seeing about 410-415 with stock tires, then 370 with the new 265/70 Revo's. Since I aired up to 39lbs I'm seeing 389 pretty regularly. I'm trying a tank now without running the a/c to see what that does.

Do you have the v6 of v8? I've been reading about that filter and seen mixed opinions whether it helps MPG at all or not. Is it louder without it in (read someone saying that it is louder)?



The 10% hit on mileage with a 265/70/17 vs 265/65/17 is that with calculating by hand to take into account the odometer error?
