Quicksilvr's Build Thread

I didn't realize they were $85. I would have done the same.

I'm putting some TRD Tundra coils up front as well except mine are KYB shocks. I want to see what you get with just the coils because I'm only looking for about 2" and hopefully I won't have to add a spacer on the top. When are you going to install the Tundra's?

I'll have to install the Tundra's pretty quick, because the 33's are going on right now as I type this. And it's going to be almost undriveable from the rubbage without the Tundras installed.

I will install the TRDT fronts without the spacers first, and see what I get.

Let's see pics!!(:

One crappy cell phone picture for now. They dumb tire tech didn't follow my instructions to static balance. Seriously, how hard can it be?? Anyway, I have to get them re-balanced.

They don't really rub that bad, just a little when I turn. Goal is to get the front exactly as high as the rear.

Looks good what made you get rid of the km1's? I have the exact same setup you had cragar soft 8 with km1's but mine are 17 inch

I wanted 285 A/T's. I drive on-road too much for M/T's. And now was the time to do it....I sold the KM1's for $420. And only paid $480 for the A/T's. Not bad.

Is there a definitive end all thread for doing the lift with the 99 Highlander springs?

Would love to know more detailed info on how to get lift that route.

I forgot to update....

I still haven't installed the Tundra front suspension, and with it sitting exactly how it sits now, it rubs the pinch welds pretty bad. I trimmed the front bumper a little, and it clears that just fine now. But the pinch welds needs trimmed down and tidied up. However, since I'm not driving the truck, I'm going to wait until I install the front suspension, to see exactly how much needs done. I'm really hoping the TRD Tundra setup will net me 1.5-2" over how it sits right now. I'm sure it will get me that at least. If the rear needs to come up to match, I'll throw a set of 890's in.

Anyone use OME 890's in the rear with the standard Bilstien HD shocks? My rear shocks still ride good, and I figured I'd keep using them even with some 890's if I end up going that way.

I need to find time to work on this dang truck. I'm itching to get it setup the way I've been imagining for a long time now....

Looking GOOD!

Thanks dude! Yours looks real purdy with the new sliders too. :thumb3:

Did you happen to weigh your sliders (each one) before you put them on? Just wondering

i got the 891s with bilstien HDs and all good here :)

should be fine with the 890s

Thanks, I figured they would be. I think Gerdo did the same thing for a while, and he even wheels the heck out of his rig. I just don't have the terrain to flex it out, so why put extra long travel stuff in the back, ya know?

Got some stuff done finally. I had to get the truck out of the garage so I could setup "woodworking" shop in there to finish a bunch of trim work in the house. I couldn't drive the truck with the 285's, because the pinch welds rubbed horribly, so I figured it just needed to put the time in and install the front suspension.

TRD Tundra front shocks and coils (coils are yellow/yellow, yellow/blue), and I figured I'd pull out the old, pop in the new, and be done in a couple hours max. I also needed to change the brake pads, but that's quick too.

Not so fast slick.

The Bilstein HD struts that were on the truck had been installed since like 2002....and spent from then until 2010 in Boston. Needless to say, I did NOT simply screw the nuts off the top hat. I'd even been shooting them with PB blaster every couple weeks for the last several months...anticipating this install. 2 screws came out on each side ok, they just took a while. I also had to cut one off each side. So I finally the old junk is out, and I laid it out next to the new stuff for comparison.

Obviously the Tundra spring is much thicker, and the strut is beefier too. However, the overall length was actually about 3/8" shorter than the Bilstein with the factory '99 spring.

Seeing that, I figured there was no way I was going to get enough lift for my 33's with JUST the Tundra's. Especially since several people had told me the don't clear 33's very well all by themselves. Well, no problem, I have some 1" Daystar top plate spacers. But.......that's means renting spring compressors and taking everything apart. So much for the 2 hour job. I ran and got some compressors, and after I'd compressed the springs, the real fun began. Toyota put a damn locking nut on the strut. So after taking the nut off the top of the strut...the threads on the strut shaft were ruined. Also, just getting the nut off is a trick, because the shaft will spin WAY easier than that locking nut, so you have to hold the shaft with a crescent wrench or vice grips. The only place to grab the shaft is on the very end, and you run out of room while spinning the nut off. Just a tip for anyone else doing this.

So the nut is off, but the threads are shot. Get a tap and die set out, and chase the threads with a M12 x 1.5. And now I need new nuts, so a trip to ACE hardware is in order.

After chasing the threads, notice they aren't sharp...but they're definitely good enough to work.

Knocked the old top plate studs out, installed the new ones, put the strut back together, set the spacer on, and installed the whole shebang. It took my dad prying down on the knuckle with a 2x4, and the sway bar disconnected to get them in.

*Side note, I did the brake pads while I was there, and will post about a little issue in the next post*

Put the truck on the ground, and holy cow, I've got tons of room now. I'm wondering if it's too much. Here's a pic.

The front is pretty high. My cv's look ok, and I have a diff drop that I can install. Does the front look too high to you guys? I think it's fine, I just need taller springs out back now, which I was planning on.

I had to take the roof rack off to get out of the garage. :roadkill:

Nice job. I was hoping you would go with just the Tundra strut only because that is what I was thinking of. How much lift did you end up with?

Not sure. I need to measure. I kind of wish I would have tried just the Tundra's....but would have kicked myself if it wasn't enough and I had to take it back out to do it again. And seeing them next to the '99 really made me think I needed the spacers.

I guess you can figure that whatever I have, the Tundra's would have given me exactly an inch less by themselves. I'll neasure them in a little and post back.

Thanks man. Yeah I know what you mean. I want 2" up front, but I'm not sure just the Tundra's will do that. Plus I don't want to have to redo everything. I think a 1/4" spacer from Toytec will do. I really like how it came out on yours and interested in your review of the Warden's now that you can drive your 4runner.

Also I vote 890's if you aren't going to have much in the back. It is easy enough to add a spacer down the line and LC's seem to sag too much with weight.

Congrats on getting it done Quicksilvr! Lmao about the "Not so fast slick."

Seems like things never go as planned. After awhile a job does go nice and smooth and leaves you wondering what you missed or where you goofed up.

Looks like you got about 2-3" out of it. You probably would have gotten a little more if it werent for the extra weight up front, but I don't think it's too high at all. Truck looks good man, now get that ass end up too.

I'd say stick to OME coils for the rear if you don't want too much rake.
