Quietest AT Tires?

my KO2s are getting loud at about half tread. horrible on wet pavement as well, skidded through an intersection the other day at a stop light... i’ll be getting toyos next i think.

Toyo AT3's are quiet when new. I think any AT tire is going to get noisier as they wear, it's kind of unavoidable.

For minimal offroad use, I would look long and hard at those Yokohama G015. Great value too.

I don't know if I had a bad set, but I found my Falken Wildpeaks to be pretty noisy. Great tires for sure, but I eventually sold them to a friend.

I replaced them with General Grabber APTs which are the sort of middle ground between General's HT and ATX.

I've been very happy with them so far from a noise perspective. I think all tires will start to get louder within probably 2-3k miles, but YMMV.

KO2s are not as quiet as people seem to say, at least not once they get down to 50% tread or so. That's how mine are getting.

Overall, the larger the treadblocks, the louder the tire is likely to be. Larger treadblocks are also more prone to cupping and feathering, which will contribute to the noise.

Every tire gets noisier as they wear, especially a more aggressive AT like a KO2, Ridge Grappler, etc... From my experience they are relatively quiet compared to others. I've had terra grapplers twice on my previous Jeeps and they both sounded like mud tires after 10k miles. I have multiple friends with Ridge Grapplers and they are quiet too. Not sure how the TG went so wrong for basically a road tire.

I've driven/ridden on all the tires mentioned so far, and several more.

When looking for tires for the TRD ORP, I wanted tougher than the stock Dunlops/Bridgestones, great wet and snow traction, decent on trails, and quiet.

They are quieter than the tires mentioned so far, and have been great in every situation I've tried them in so far.

I don't have many pics, but here's one from the side. They aren't mud terrains, but they are definitely more aggressive looking than the stock Dunlops.

I recently upgraded to a ‘21 GX460 from a ‘20 ORP. Had Wildpeaks on the 4Runner, and decided to try Continental TerrainContact A/T’s on the GX. Amazing tires, incredibly smooth and quiet yet off road capable. I much prefer them to the Falken’s. I think they would be a great fit for your intended use.

The Cooper ST Maxx I had were somewhat noisy. Not annoying by any stretch but it was there.

I switched to Yokohama Geolandar AT's and they're the quietest tire I've ever driven on. Very nice on road. And great off-road so far, I've used them on more then just dirt roads... They don't look as agressive as some AT's, but they certainly perform well as an all terrain.

I’m planning to level my ‘21 Venture (maybe 1” up front) but will likely stick with 265s (maybe 275s). I’m going to keep the stock TRD Pro wheels. And I will be on pavement 98% of the time.

But I like the look of AT tires. With that said, which are the quietest AT tires out there?

Noise and aggressive looks often go hand in hand. The small tread blocks and narrow voids on highway tires are a big reason they're so quiet and modest in appearance. At the opposite extreme, Mud Terrain tires have large tread blocks and wide voids between them that make them both aggressive and loud. What you probably want is the most aggressive sidewall you can find on a set of tires with the most highway-tire-like tread pattern.

From that shot of the tread by [MENTION=4043]O2SE[/MENTION] I too believe those Yokohama's are worth a look (though I have no experience with them).

That said, I recently chose Toyo Open Country AT3 tires. I do about 90% highway driving and was willing to put up with a bit of noise for the performance gains when I am offroad. But I have been pleasantly surprised by just how quiet they've been so far. Currently they make no more noise than highway tires I've run. I have a thread with my thoughts on them here. These tires have only been on the market since March 2020 and I've yet to reach five-digit mileage with them. But my research leads me to believe all the manufacturers are making strides forward in noise reduction with their most recent tire releases. So you may want to consider that as well.

I just got the new Cooper Discoverer Rugged Treks in 285/70r17. They are a tiny bit
louder than stock size Terra Grapplers but can’t really tell unless you are paying attention to it. On the highway, the TRD exhaust drone and my radio drown out any road noise anyway. They are more of a hybrid AT/ MT with pretty
aggressive tread and sidewalls. I took them through some 1-2ft deep mud the other day and they handled it easily. Drive great so far on highway with good traction on rain/wet roads. Had to remove my front mud flaps due to rubbing though- even with the Westcott Designs TRD Pro lift installed.

Pretty happy with my Cooper Discoverer AT3-4s. I put them on at about 500mi. 20K on them now. Almost as quiet as the butter soft stock tires. They've been great in the winter and they commute like a boss! Hahaha! Just leveled with Eibach Pro Truck Sport shocks, front set at 0.85, the ride is SOOOO much better now!
