R150F Input Shaft Play - How much is too much?

I'll be doing a 5-speed swap soon, and I picked this R150F transmission off a wrecked '99 4Runner last weekend. I don't know much about the history of the 4Runner it came off of. All I know is it had a clean title history and passed smog last year before it was involved in some sort of front end collision. I do not know the miles or anything like that.

After taking the transmission off, I noticed there was a little play in the input shaft. There is some lateral play (play up/down/left/right) about 1mm, some torsional play (play clockwise/counterclockwise) probably 1 degree or so, but no play in/out.

I checked the factory service manual, and there is no spec for minimum input shaft play.

I'm not totally opposed to having the transmission rebuilt, but if I don't have to I'm not going to, I'd rather drive it and get it rebuilt when I NEED it. Would just like an opinion from someone that might have a little experience in this.

I don't remember the one I handled with play like that, granted it only had 120K on it. I had it rebuilt cause I didn't exactly trust the claimed mileage, but it was tight and mint when pulled apart. I have another in my parts rig I've yet to pull out. Here's my rebuild apart in a box. So probably a bad roller bearing on yours.

I had forgotten about the service records Toyota keeps. I was able to register the VIN and find some history on it.

The vehicle had 296,000 miles on it in 2016, and was wrecked in 2018, so this transmission likely has well over 300,000 miles. Nowhere in the service records does it say anything about the transmission being serviced, and it looked like the previous owner had some issues with the clutch.

...so I think it would be best to have it rebuilt.

The R-150 I have in my 4runner had no noticeable play on the front bearings... The front bearing in yours is probably worn

I would definitely have it rebuilt if it has over 300 K miles.
It will be much smoother / drive better when you put it back in.

The lateral roll of the front bearing is normal, if it's not leaking oil out the front the bearing is ok...the end play is what should cause concern but it doesn't sound like you have any by feel...tough to feel 10 to 15k...that being said these are easy to rebuild and would be nice to add a strong clutch with it...better to do it now than find out after.
