Rack and Pinion Leak

Well here we go.. My power steering is leaking and I'm not 100% sure where exactly on the rack and pinion. I see i can buy a seal kit for $50. But I'm thinking about just buying the whole Rack and Pinion. I seen an OEM one is $500 or so but I also found Detroit Axle and they have a lifetime warranty and is half the price.

Anyone ever work with them before?

I've already read that. That's one place I seen Detroit Axle on here but there wasn't any input of the company. I don't want to spend the money for an OEM unless it's necessary. I seen some other off brand rack and pinions created some "play" in the steering. But I haven't seen anything on people using the ones from Detroit Axle.

yeah i'll do 85 for the rack. It was good - no play when I pulled it. Not sure how much shipping would be but if you want I'll calculate that for you.

I opted to go with OEM for several reasons.

Aftermarket racks don't have a great reputation.
The cost of alignments add up.
Comes with inner tie rods.
Laying in the dirt sucks.

My main worries are the seals... I don't wanna go through the issues of replacing the seals if they are old on the 97.. it may just be my seals that are bad on my 00 but the issue of repressing the seals and all are a pain.. like my steering feels great right now minus the slow leak.. that's why I'm shooting for a complete new one with the seals new and installed.

There is a guy in Oxnard ,Ventura Ca. area that you can send him your rack, he makes any necessary repairs reseals then test it & ships it back to you,
I know a few people who have sent him steering racks & PS pumps and we're happy with the results, if I remember correctly he has been doing it for a long time, Price wasn't bad either,
Just another option?

I got a new rack from Napa. I've had it for 3 years and it's worked great

In my experience, aftermarket racks come with inners. You can get an entire aftermarket new (not reman) for around the price new OEM inner tie rods would be...

I think it's called the rebuild factory in Oxnard Ca. Maybe Google it?
I think you contact him he sends you a repair # you send him the rack....
A friend of mine sent him his rack & PS pump from his Buick GN a year or so ago, said he did a good job.
An option to look into.

I've been using front strut replacements from Detroit Axle with no problems so far. Don't know about the racks though.
