rack & pinion took a $h!t

woke up to a garage floor covered w/ flourescent green fluid. It was the the R&P...why was it green though?
anyways I put some 10W-40 in last night and test drove it, no leaks. Took it to work this AM no leaks.

did this on my Jeep before. I used a thicker oil w/ no problems. I know it's not the right thing to do, but I'm married w/ kids and a new house....NO MONEY$$$

Yeah, something doesn't add up here... PS fluid is tranny fluid and isn't green.

Did you put engine oil in the PS reservoir?

Gear oil might appear a bit green if it is new. Check your diff and transfer case.

Please clarify. If the fluid was bright green, why did you think it was the power steering? Was the steering not working properly. Was the steering fluid low. Did you check to see what color fluid was in the steering reservoir?

I'm asking because radiator fluid is typically green or red in toyotas. I've never seen green ps fluid. The best thing for you to do is flush the steering fluid with DEX3 immediately until it matches the new dex3 fluid. It should take only 3 quarts to flush and replace the ps fluid. Then check your rear heater lines because you probably have a coolant leak.

Toyota specs ATF in our P/S system, but it could be that someone put synthetic P/S fluid in it, which can be green in color, but not really all that common

OR it is probably coolant and you were just low on power steering fluid

coolant good...I knew it was p/s that was leaking because the day before it all happened, i was low on P/S fluid (pump was crying) then it took a dump in the garage...haha
