I know we have been takling about this in another thred but I kind of wanted to be more specific and get off the point of lasers and talk about radar detectors. I was hoping poeple could say which one they have and what they think of it!

Nothing can beat the V1. We've used Passport for many years and then got a V1, and it's simply amazing. It picks up radar triple the distance that the passport ever picked it up.
 
V1 all the way. Once you've gotten used to the directional indicators and the bogey counter, you wonder how you ever got by without it.

I've even had mine warn me of impending laser. When the smokeys shoot cars ahead of you, there can be enough scatter of the beam that the V1 can pick it up.

If you keep getting short, quick laser warnings, that's usually what it is from. You can then expect a full warning very soon! However if you're out all by yourself and get hit by laser, it's too late no matter what detector you have.

Since people will be posting about Radar detectors here, I want to know this:

Are they considered illegal to have in the state of CA? I mean, if you get pulled over for speeding and the CHP just happens to see yours mounted, are you in deeper trouble? Excuse my ignorance, I don't speed so I never look this stuff up. :D
 
No they re not illegal in CA, however the CHP might be more strict on you if they see you have one.

As far as the new Escort Passport 9500i I have heard nothing but bad things about it's GPS features.

The V1 and Escort Passport 8500 X50 have very close ratings, each one has strengths over the other, but are pretty equal overall. The difference is that the V1 has directional indicators and is about $100 more.
 
I have a Bel STI Driver. I have had passport and valentine in my otehr cars, and thsi is teh best I have seen ever. It is the absolute best when it comes to pulse. In states taht they dont allow radar detectors, they check for radar detector emmissions. This one is cased in Magnesium, and emits ZERO. They cant tell you have it, so they dont pulse you as much. I pick up pulse about 1 mile to 2 miles away depending on terrain and how oftem they pop the trigger. Fricking awesome

Do a search on google that compares radar detectors. Any reputable source will have the Bel Sti, Vlentine 1, and Escort Passport at the top of their list, with the Bel Sti usually having a slight lead. Of course you will get different opinions based on different sources.

Bel Sti is hands down the best if you don't want to get detected for having a radar detector.

For anyone who is interested, here's a list of the top 10 speed trap cities.

Well I think the choice is clear.... I need to try the V1, I have already had the 2 passports. I thought the 8500 was great but the 9500i was no better, in fact I got more false readings with it and the GPS is cool for giving your speed but that is it. I have always liked the V1 and used one of a friends for a road trip and loved it, I think the directional feature is awesome.

I have never had a V1 but do really like the idea of the directional arrows. I do have an Escort 8500 and can tell you that I don't think I'd want a radar detector more sensitive than it (as some people claim the V1 is). The Passport falses less than any Bel I've ever owned, and so far is working closer to new (approx 3 years old) than any Bel I've ever owned as well, which start beeping at everything and all the time as they get a few years old. The Passport gives me plenty of warning time to slow down, sometimes over a minute if I'm on a freeway. If a V1 is more sensitive than the Passport, then I'd be even more irriated having the thing beep at me for several minutes while I'm approaching the cop... my main desire is to have it warn me with enough time to slow down, but not tell me 2 miles back that a cop is ahead. But some people want to know everything as soon as possible and don't mind the constant beeping (or ticking) over their tunes. If that describes you, then you should get the V1. Based on the rave reviews the V1 has had for years, you will probably like it a lot.

The doors dude, the doors...


The sensor that detects people coming so they can open the doors automatically is what does it.

There is a new Home Depot a little ways off of a highway here (appx. C-470 & 285 on the west side for locals) that sets mine off from almost 2 miles away!!! As you are headed North on the hwy, the doors are straight in front of you at one point (my detector picks them up at Bowles).

Now, granted I'm running the detector at it's highest sensitivty level, and if I put it into city mode it's not as much of a problem.

Never thought about that. It's very annoying to say the least. I'm starting to keep mine unplugged for city driving, since I don't usually go more than 5 mph over the speed limit. If I do, I am very careful, whether I have the detector on or not.
 
After reading this thread I'm thinking of getting a V1. Years ago I had one of the original Escorts, and it was pretty good.

I really don't speed much, but I like gadgets a lot, and I think the V1 might be fun to have. Also, even if I'm not speeding, I do like the idea of knowing ahead of time that there's a cop ahead.

I don't suppose there are ever any online coupons or sales on the V1?
