Please state your source that any radar detector is illegal in CA.

I have it on good authority that specifically radar detectors are legal in all US states, except Wash DC and Viginia

Radar detectors are completely legal to use in non-commercial vehicles. Virginia and Washington DC are the only 2 states in the United States that currently ban the use of radar detectors.

There is a federal law banning use of radar detectors in any commercial vehicle over 10,000 pounds. Radar detectors are also illegal on any military base.

for the record, Ive used a V1 in CA for about 12 years now and not gotten a ticket with it (for speeding) my commute is about 150 miles each way and I do it at least once a week and I do that trip in about 2 hours to 2 hours 15 minutes.
 
Things attached to the windsheild in CA

Now attaching something to your windshield in CA other than a rear view mirror is illegal.

and you can get busted for that

Ok so two questions for the radar knowledgable out there!

1. Since in CA you are not supposed to attach anything to the windshield, where are all my CA brethren attaching said radar?

2. Good sites/places to go to buy said radar? More than likely by reading the posts, the V1.

You are best off buying a V1 from their site, because they offer a 30-day trial period in which you can return it. They sell for about the same price on Ebay, so you won't be saving much $$$.

I keep my Escort in the upper left corner of my window. It still has a clear view behind me, and is less noticeable than if it were in the middle of my windshield. Not to mention I can run the power cord down the A pillar to keep it out of site. I hate wires showing.

I've run the 8500 for a couple years now. I love it. No tickets.

The V1 is supposedly awesome, but boy is it ugly.
 
My V1 (Old style - aka the uggly one)

In my T4R, I mount mine up high on the windsheild slightly to the left and above the mirror, and I took the power from the connection to the display in the mirror, so the wire is about 3 inches long.

When it was in my Chevy 4x tahoe, I had it velcrowed to the top of the dash

and in my little rocket ship saab 93 turbo, where i actually use it a lot, i just have it smack in the middle of the windsheild. if I ever get pulled over, I just unclip it and put it away before the officer gets to my window

no tickets for speeding for about 14 years

the current valentine is a about 1/2 the size of the older one

I fixed my speeding issues by getting a 4Runner and haven't had a ticket since '03 but prior to that I had about 15 tickets in 10 years when I had a very fast car.

my wife bought a saab 93 2.0T because of its saftey record. check out the IIHA saftey records

One night driving home with the dash lights out, I found I was doing about 145MPH (no error in what I just wrote) without realizing it, I have since had it over 150MPH 3 times on purpose

this thing is a total bullet, but I try to run no faster than about 80.

and I religiously run my V1 in the saab

never been that fast, even on my motor cycles at most maybe 130 odd

I am on my 2nd V1. I absolutely LOVE IT !!!! I had an old original ESCORT which was good but V1 is waaaay better. They have a policy that if their technology improves, you can send the unit back and get it upgraded for $ 50.00 to keep your V1 current (price and policy might have changed, I dunno). My original unit sounded like there was a piece of something broken off and rattling around inside the unit. Sent it back to V1 and they replaced the unit with an upgraded, NEW unit for $ 50.00! I use the V1 when I drive to Norfolk/Va. Beach for work (Navy) and never get the radar detected. I keep it on the visor. Just my $.02.:biggrin2:
 
Thank you to all for your responses and your input!! I have no question as to which radar detector I will get the V1 of course as soon as I am back state side and pick up my runner! I will be getting it on April 7th so stoked!!!

x2... V1 all the way. I have it hardwired in my GTI for quiet some time and it is well worth the money....
 
Add another vote for the V1. I've had several V1's since the mid or late '90's. I lost the first one as part of a divorce settlement. :mad:

The other unit has been upgraded several times over the years and finally traded in for a new, smaller V1 2 years ago. We use it on trips in the 4Runner or in my wife's car if she's traveling.

Don't leave home without it. :D
 
Is any radar detector capable of giving the driver advance notice of Instant On radar? I mean other than the officer targets the car in front or behind you and the radar detector picks it up at that time.

My understanding is with Instant On you're pretty much screwed.
 
Yup - with instant on, that is my understanding too

The only defense you might have in that situation is the police radar another car ahead or behind you first and you detect the 'scatter' coming from that contact

I know that the V1 is the best out there. I ended up buying a 8500, brand new, from a friend who had it and never used it. Upgrading from a Cobra, I saw a huge diffrence. The POP feature is helpful, It actually works. It saved my a$$ many times. Not to mention the 360 coverage.

I think for an experienced driver, someone can start to know his/her streets well and have an eye to where a cop may be hiding. So in a way, I have memorized allot of my highways. If I'm a stranger to a new high, somehow, I end up knowing when its safe to slow down and when its good to floor it.

I would say I have blind faith in my 8500. I trust it way to much
