Radio/Communication Equipment

I want to see what some of you have for radio equipment in your 4runners. I know many of you run cb radios, any Ham operators here as well?

In my 4runner, I have a Cobra 29gtl old school CB radio with a front fender mount firestik antenna. I also have a Yaesu Ft-8800r dual band VHF/UHF radio with a permanent Larsen 2/70 antenna on the roof. Yes I'm crazy and drilled a hole in my roof. As for placement, the Yaesu has a remote head unit option so I thought I would put it right on my console where it is easily accessible, the Cobra was rather large so I mounted it to the floorboard on the side of my shift boot. Sorry for the cell phone pic, it is the only one I have at the moment.

Yup, Paragliding as well. My dads a competition Ham, so someday ill get into that. Was raised with the stuff. Ive got a CB in there two, so a total of 3 antennas on the vehicle at one time. Very pokey 4runner!

I see your part of SaR, use yours for that or hobby as well?

I use it for both, I have my old school CB that I use with my budies off road. I use my yaesu for hobby and SAR missions. I also enjoy listening to police bands and whatnot too olice:

I went with a nmo-k on my roof for my vhf/uhf radio. Kinda hard to see because it is a pretty skinny antenna.

I have to park outside so quick detach was important to me as well as having a view of the sky for the GPS (I do APRS off the d710) so I went with a lido mount up front on the floor. I've only had it in there a few days (I've only owned the 4runner for a week now!) but so far it gets GPS signal fine and doesn't bounce around too much while on road. We'll have to see what happens when I hit the dirt the first time.

The external speaker is mounted via two-way tape on the front of the glove box now. You can see it lying on the floor in the background before I mounted it up.... it covers over the scratches on the glove box.

The radio unit itself is under the drivers seat for now.

No mounted CB yet, have a hand unit in my emergency box.

I just got done putting this in today. I picked this CB up the other day and so far so good. I also have a Yeasu 2M radio but I haven't put it in yet. I'm not sure on where to mount it. These 1st gen runners are pretty limited for space.

I hear ya there. Do you like that cobra? Those look pretty cool but have never used one in person. I kinda want to get a nightwatch one but I don't use cb all that often so it's not worth it to me.

I am also thinking about getting a vhf business band radio but I am pretty much out of room for more radio equipment unless I mount it on the floor pan on the drivers side.

So far I really like the Cobra 29lx. It's self tuning with a built in SWR meter and you can tune the incoming freq's to a certain extent. It does an auto scan on 10 weather channels and will alert you of incoming weather alerts. I really like the weather part for the wheeling in the mountains. I have very little experience in CB's but so far I am impressed with how easy this one is to use and learn.

As for mounting options for another radio, you can always mount it on the head board. You can also try to find another radio with the remote mount and velcro it to your dash or something.

2 NMO Mounts on the roof.

I use the ham radio around town and on the trail. Also for F/R. Speakers are attached to the CB and the ham radio. Garmin is attached to the ham radio for APRS.

I have the weather channels on my Yaesu, handy info to have for sure.
I have my Yaesu on my headboard so I am limited to my dash at this point for additional radio equipment.

still haven't gotten around to getting my ham ticket so i can get on 2m, but hoping to get back to studying for it over the summer. i think i'll just use a HH 2m for the vehicle so i can take it w/ me to the campsites, office, etc...

I need a place to put my newer dedicated 2meter ham rig. I'm running out of room. :wow2:
Think I might do a hood mount for this one. If I need too much more I always have my main yaesu with the perm mount.
