Rarest 3rd gen of them all?

Dirtco has a nice autumn blaze truck. I've seen only one of the horizon blue metallic 4Runners, that's a sorta purple/blue, and one glacier metallic that looked seafoam greenish in the afternoon light. In passing, so no idea of the specs on either.

Mine's azure blue pearl but many of the goodies are not stock AND I've seen a few of them so it's a nope.

Maybe we should turn this into a contest to see who on the forum has the rarest 3rd gen. [MENTION=67615]Dirtco[/MENTION]'s is awesome. habanero thanks for reminding me who it was!

Some of the one year production color codes must be the rarest 3rd gens with all the options we talk about like manual, locker, etc. Like for the year 99 with Autumn Blaze who here has seen one? Not me. Pretty sure someone on the forum had one just don't remember who. Even with Stellar Blue I don't think I've seen a 96-98 4Runner in that color even though the chart says it was an option.

I see this Autum Blaze Metallic runner quite often at a local grocery store. I always chuckle at all the emblems on it. The color is quite nice though.

Oh man I'm totally gonna steal that idea! I've never seen an autumn blaze 4Runner where I live guess they are a bit more common elsewhere.

Ok it's late and I'm stoned so this is the time I starting thinking like a kid. I started wondering what the rarest 3rd gen would be? The unicorn of the 3rd gen world.

I personally have no idea, but I'm wondering if there is some super rare interior option, or paint scheme or.....something.

We've all heard tales about some hotrod from the past that had some weird engine or engine/tranny combo; only seven came from the factory that way — sort of thing. What would that be for the 3rd gen?

It's the only one I've seen.

I was intrigued by the color and had to search this forum last year to figure out what it was. Too bad many of the Autum Blaze runners also came with the grey or topaz (according to Toyota) flares and cladding — which I think totally kills the color.

The SR5 models look clean though.

You probably saw Stellar Blue with Thundercloud cladding... that is what I have. The Stellar Blue never came with silver trim, but in the bright sunlight it can look almost silver.

Nope. The 3rz 5spd 4wd w elocker and tow package including the mystical 4.56 gears.

I have a 4wd 5spd locker 3rz....but that 4.56 gearing though.

The supercharger and headers never came from the factory. Ever. That person is full of shit. The Highlander isn't rare.

I'm going to say that a 3RZ with a manual transmission and rear locker is the rarest. Throw in the manual windows with that mix. I saw one that was close, but it didn't have the locker.

Wow, when I was looking for my 4Runner, I test drove a 4Runner here in my town, with manual windows, a 3RZ, 5 spd with locker. He wanted way too much money for it, it was pretty rusty and it had 370K Km's...

Not long after I bought my 4Runner, a workmate bought a Jade green 96 4Runner 3RZ, 5 spd no locker 125K km. On a party weekend trip to Vancouver, as he was headed down on the highway, he blew the rear main seal in his Subaru resulting in engine seizure. He parked it removed the plates, pulled out the smart phone called a bud and opened Craigslist. He totally lucked out, as the first vehicle he looked at was the 4Runner! When he arrived home after the weekend, the first thing he did was peel off the "swooping wave" decals on the sides of his new 4Runner! The second was to replace the 15" wheels!

Any with manual windows would be up there in rarity. You also have the one year only not very popular paint colors like Autumn Blaze and Glacier that when combined with other options would make a rare truck, the factory elocker 3rz 5 speed would be pretty rare as well.

My buddies 04 taco has manual locks and windows with a 3rz. Never seen that in a 4Runner though.
I feel my Stellar Blue is pretty rare but there's definitely more of those than Autumn Blaze's on here. I've never seen one of the Glacier Metallics however (I think that's what it's called). For Stellar Blue being one of four colors produced the whole generation, I think there's far less ratio wise.

1. Cardinal Red (1996)
2. Autumn Blaze (1999)
3. Glacier Metallic (2001)
4. Golden Pearl (2002)

A Tacoma with those options(or rather the lack of) is not rare. It's meant for work, so finding a bare bones truck from the early 2000s is not hard. Trying to find a bare bones work truck on a dealer lot now is a different story.

It would be harder to find a bare bones 3rd gen since people were buying these as a more special alternative to a boring ass Camry or Avalon. They wanted comforts with the style.
