I actually use an independant shop for stuff I can't do at home, not because I don't like the dealer but because the closest Toyota dealer I trust is 45mins away.

Having said that, I just purchased a brand new weekend toy and the dealership for it is 75mins away and I will be taking it there for all service I can't preform that way when its comes to resale time, there will aleast be a few records of service.

I agree with Mike. Just assume it was never done and do it now. It isn't worth the risk. Dealer prices are high not just because the rate is higher, but because they use dealer parts that are going to be twice the price of aftermarket.

Well, this is pretty convincing.

My neighbour is has a 2006 4runner in mint condition and recommended an independent close to home he has used for years. Apparently he is the cops and firefighters "guy." I was a little skeptical of his quick assessment, but after reading everything here I can imagine the highly trained eye seeing the evidence or lack thereof right away. He said he'd do it for $1050 - cash deal. The dealer is $1200 plus 13% tax (gotta love free health care).

Darn. Thats gonna weigh heavily on the budget. I have done a timing chain in my lifetime, but that was decades ago on a 70's Firebird. I'm doubtful of my skills these days even with the experts help here.

That intrigues me... but my experience is that it rarely ends up being worth it. Or, to better put, by the time you take 10% exchange, a tank or two of gas and a bunch of your time, you save might possibly save a bill or two but you're exhausted from the effort. And time is becoming my enemy.

Now, buying tires and picking them up, that's another story...
