Rattle/Grinding noise?

Hey guys,
New to the forum, just picked up a 05 runner sr5 v6 last week. 135k miles. Love the car but started to notice a odd noise today that is making me a little concerned. It sounds like a heat shield rattle but i think it might be coming from the transmission. It only happens at very low rpms, around 1200 or so, and only when accelerating. Has anybody experienced this noise before and know what the potential issue is?

Any help of thoughts is much appreciated!

Hard to tell exactly what you're experiencing, but I had a similar noise happen to me about a month ago where I thought it was the brakes or something grinding. I got a weird rubbing/rattling noise when at lower RPMs. My situation was a rusted out pipe connecting my resonator to the muffler. The pipe had not rusted all the way though and when acceleration started it would vibrate and make the noise I was hearing.

Stealership told me $961 plus tax to fix. This included 1 hours worth of labor. I took to a muffler shop and had them put on an aftermarket magna flow and entire pipe with chrome tip for $214 out the door. I ended up looking up the parts the dealer wanted to sell me and the two factory parts were being quoted $250 over MSRP. Again another reason why some dealers are just crooks. I could see selling to me for MSRP, but to rip someone off is just plain nonsense.

Good luck in your search for the answer. I'd also suggest making sure all heat shields are on there tight. I know one time I got a small rock in the circular shield around the CAT I think and it banged around with tons of annoying sounds until I removed. Just another possibility.

HAD a similar problem..exhaust pipe rusted and parted and ended up resting on part of the drive shaft/frame....so at certain speeds and rpm..you would hear a rattle.......drove me nuts........as it broke at the elbow..which wasnt very visible unless the car is in a pit

Thanks for the reply's - I will be taking a closer look this weekend when I have more time, crossing my fingers it is something a quick and easy find and fix
