Rattle noise/loose skid plates?

I was just doing a little off-roading out on a snowy mountain back road. I went off a little hill which ended up being miss judged and bottom out a little. nothing too bad, cold hear some rubbing, rubbed some coating off of the fuel tank on a rock that ended up sticking out. other than than I'm not sure anything else touched other than front bumper in a little snow and the trailer hitch.

But right after getting back on the main road I started hearing a tink-tink tink sound as I drove. Could hear it from the driver window and sounded like I could hear from the back window too.

Everything seems to be tight. Skid plates don't feel loose. Anyone else had this experience? Any ideas as to what I should check for? Nothing other than that one little spot on the fuel tank looks like it touched or rubbed.

The "tink-tink-tink" makes me think that it's interference with a rotating part. Does the speed of the noise increase and decrease with vehicle speed?

no, its random, as I am hitting bumps, not a specific pattern nor does it change with speed/rpms. like there is something loose, bouncing around

Maybe it's something like a rock, stick, or chunk of ice somewhere? It doesn't sound like you had enough impact to damage to anything.

I suppose maybe something was stuck. Who knows. I got back on the pavement a couple miles later and drove home. Too much other road noise to determine if it continued. I'll have to check again next time.

It was fun either way.

I guess maybe when things warm up and I have time I'll get under and make sure all the skid plates are tight.

so just went for another drive on pavement. When I hit bumps in the road, it sounds like its coming from front left. More like a clink clink than tink tink.
Blown shock absorber maybe? i have XREAS. Its consistent with the road bumps and shocks. But I don't hear it from the rear. I do know that my shocks are seeping, but very slowly.

Check the heat shield on the exhaust.

Check the heat shields, the plastic piece on the rear of the rear skid plate (I've had that bend upward and rub on one of the shafts), & I also once had a small stone get between one of the rotaors and the brake shield.

Skid Plate Loose

I just recently bought my 2006 4Runner. I absolutely love it, but I'm starting to hear a rattling noise when I accelerate. Once I get out of 1st gear, it goes away.

I got under the truck yesterday and looked, and the back two bolts securing the skid plate had rusted out. I got someone to rev the engine and I got underneath and held the plate still, and the noise was gone -- so I'm assuming this is the problem. I tried taking the other bolt off to measure it and take it to the store, but it split in half when I tried to loosen it.

So, any suggestions? Could I just take the whole skid plate off, or do you think it's a necessity? Any advice you have would be great, I'm new to this! Thanks.

Does it happen when driving straight? On turns? I have an awful noise that just started and found my rear sway bar is broken in half and under the right conditions the ends rub and make the noise. It may be worth looking at yours.

You won't hurt anything by taking both pieces of the skid plate off and driving it like that. I left mine off for the first year I owned it because I was always having to remove them because I was doing a lot of front-end work.

On mine, there are two sections of skid plate and each is held by four bolts making a total of 8 bolts between the two sections. All of the bolts are the same.
