Rattling from the front end of my 03 4runner

Hello, I have a rattling noise coming from the front end of my 4runner. The one thing that I have come up with is my CV joint. When I reach up and jiggle the CV that comes from the differential there is play and it does make a rattling noise. Is this a legit diagnosis? Also I don't see a hole in the rubber boot but there seems to be a lot of grease around the tire side of the boot.

When is it happening? Driving, idle?
Check the skid plates, they rust and the bolts break off during oil changes. Then they rattle like crazy. You'll notice the rattle in gear at idle.
