RCI bare metal skid plate

Hey guys, I recently got an RCI skid plate in bare metal. I'm going to rustoleum it however, all I have for cleaning it is either simply green and mineral spirits. which would you guys use, or do I need to steer clear of those and use something else (recommendations)? I found plenty of skid plate painting threads, just I didn't find any prepping guidelines. Thanks!

Just spray it down with some spray paint. If you're using them as intended, the skids are going to get scratched up anyway.

Aye, I don't mind that it's going to get scratched up but it's dirty (black powdery substance), I'm assuming all things from a fab shop will have. I was just wondering if water and soap would work, or the cleaners I mentioned before I spray can it. And I'm not sure what you mean if there's ducking on it.

I'd say a good clean with mineral spirits would be fine.

Ducking is a layer of black that is on steel when it is CNC laser cut. It helps keep spatter down at the mill.

notice the color difference between the NWTI letters and the rest of the steel. That's ducking...

If yours is bare steel, as in, shiny shiny, then just clean it up with wax and grease remover. That'll eliminate any oils from the surface, and you'll be ready to prime and paint.

For primer, I'd recommend a self-etching primer. If you're going to paint it red, there's a good brown primer by Rustoleum. If you're going to paint it black or white, use white primer.

At least 2 coats of primer, and 3 or 4 coats of paint should be good. From the first coat of primer, I wouldn't wait more than 15-20 minutes between coats. Or if you miss the 20 minute mark, wait AT LEAST 24 hours before you apply your next coat.

simple green, alcohol, mineral spirits, acetone, etc. etc. etc. etc.

Stuff like this I just hose down with brake cleaner prior to painting..

After reading everyone comments, I think I over killed mine.

1. Soap and water, let dry
2. Prep using POR 15 metal prep - let dry - lightly brush off the loose white powder
3. Paint with POR 15 black
4. Spray silver high temp paint
