Re-gearing Question

I've done some searching and know that my 91 3.slo is way underpowered. However, I was extremely displeased at my total lack of power driving up the mountain to big bear. I'm running 31x10.5 AT tires on it. So my question is would re-gearing help get me up the hill a little better and if so what gear ratio should I go to?

Check what your current gear ratio is right now. You can look in the door jamb for the code. Gearratiosanddiffs This website will tell you where and how to identify them. If you have g254 then you will have 4.56, which is what you should have with 31's. Is your t4r an auto or 5speed? Basically the 3.0 sucks and no matter what gear ratio you slap on there it will suck at climbing hills. Re-gearing will cost you a good amount. Hopefully you don't have a 3.90 ratio. Cross your fingers for a 4.88.

I'm not an expert on gears, but I wouldn't imagine it would. Most people have 4.88's with 33's, so I think it would just be overkill. It would be better to spend your money on a 3.4 swap or getting a 3rd gen IMO. The 3.0 sucks for power and mileage, plain and simple. I would suggest a good set of headers and exhaust system will give you more bang for your buck.

Believe me I've been kicking my ass, I had a rebuilt motor put in last February and came across the 3.4 swap after the mechanic had already dropped in the new 3.0 ...... SO PISSED lol

Yeah I spent a pretty penny to get my 3.0 fixed after a bad head gasket from the PO. It works fine, but the 3.4 is much better. I'm looking into a 3rd gen in the next few months, for mileage, power, comfort and saftey. I would get headers and a new exhaust if you want a little more power like I mentioned before. I've heard that it's the best improvement for these motors.
