Real time XREAS help!!

I just had my front shocks replaced with xreas and now my rears are busted.

STS is telling me I can't replace the rear shocks with 5100s and leave the xreas in the front, but I'm under the impression that I can.

I eventually want 5100's for the front, but these xreas shocks are not even 6 months old and haven't seen much abuse.

So I guess the question is, can I put the 5100s in the rear, disconnect the hydraulics and leave xreas up front?

No, X-reas is cross linked. Left front is linked to right rear and they work together all the time. Eliminating the rear shocks would make the front shocks useless. Generally they are replaced in pairs (LF & RR)...(RF & LR)

No, XREAS is cross-linked. Which means drivers' front is connected to passenger rear. Likewise, the passenger front is connected to the driver's rear. So no, you just can't have ONLY fronts or ONLY rears. You are going to have to rip the whole thing out.

OR, repair the remaining shocks.

What is "busted" about the rears? Leaking oil, or physically the rod broken off upper mount? Or is the cover just rusted off? Sounds like your repair shop has little to no experience w xreas

should replace all with 5100s.. Most folks do once XREAS failed.. Best 350 bucks youll spend.. you already have the fronts might as well get the rears. also while at it get the FJ coils.

They said it was leaking. This shop is GARBAGE. I'm letting them finish what they started for free and then doing everything myself or taking it to a deal from here on out. Thanks guys

NOw they just called back and said that it was "rusted" and that they could put billys in the back and xreas up front. I think im gonna gut xreas and put the 5100s myself unless they give me a killer deal.

Thanks. I'll actually be in Maine next week with the GF seeing her family in Portland.

I just spoke to these clowns again. This is the last time my truck is ever going there, but I'm spending my dad's money so he has final say and wants the car to be the way that it's "supposed" to be and doesn't quite trust me to buy bilsteins and put them in myself but thats a conversation for another time.

They're charging enarly 300 for parts and labor in the rear shocks - a set of 5100s would be marginally more + free install.. :ybrick:

I don't tknow where they get off charging 150 to put in the rear shocks, it takes like 20 mins per side.

They tried to tell me that you cannot remove XREAS because your brakes will fail.

They tried to tell me that all the squeaking from the front shock is because of the lift and my only option is to remove DS lift.

Someone tell me that they're as dumb as I think they are?

Wow, that is just stupid. Brakes have nothing to do with XREAS... No connection electrical/physical whatsoever.............

I know there are several other members running ds lifts with xreas without issues.

The guy was all "I've been doing this for 45 years blah blah blah" and I said that cars have changed a lot in 45 years...

Hey buddy,
So it all depends on what kind of lift you are running....if you are going with the Daystar top mount spacer lift than you should have no problem at all....i installed mine last week in 2.5 hours for all 4....second, the XREAS has absolutely nothing to do with the brakes.....there is absolutely no electrical connection from the XREAS to the vehicle itself....it is a fairly simple hydraulic system, cross-linked hydraulic shocks with a nitro charged dampening system connecting the front to rear shock, opposing sides....if you want to remove the xreas you will have to remove all 4...otherwise generally i believe toyota suggests replacing them in pairs....lf& rr....rf&lr....anyways....as far as the squeaking goes i would have to look at it myself to try and determine what exactly is squeaking....did you already have the fronts replaced? i have never seen a shock squeak unless it has leaked all the oil out and the shaft is dry, or the mount can squeak if the rubber bushing is worn....like i said earlier i dont think these guys have had much experience with the xreas....I believe there are tons of users here that have the daystar/xreas system combo and havent really heard of any problems....

Thanks Lobsta. I yelled at them for replacing the FR and FL at the same time. this shop has continually dropped the ball, one time they forgot to replace a sway bar link nut and it fell and torn the CV boot apart... good thing it was under warranty.

These guys are just *******s too. They never listen to me or respect my opinion. I'm fed up with it and the truck is going to a dealer for anything I can't do from here on out. I have a feeling the bushing may be worn, the shock isn't leaking at all. Or it may be a sway bar bushing, I planned on replacing those today but I don't have my truck back yet, though they promised it would be done by noon.

They also got pretty combative about the lift issue and were very persistent that the lift is causing these issues, despite the fact that I was driving around with it before and the issues started after they replaced the shocks.

and yes, its the DS 2.5/1.5 top mount spacer lift.

That's totally F*cked up. Hope you get that crap squared away. If you (like me) are going to do stuff you yourself can't handle, head over to Conicelli Toyota. Price's are too bad. They haven't screwed up anything on my truck.

Man im real sorry you keep having so many problems with these guys! At my shop the customer is always #1 and unless they are being absolutely ridiculous i always treat them with the utmost respect. These things are generally pretty simple to diagnose....have a friend rock your truck back and forth while you slide underneath, look and listen for any play or noise....use your hand to feel individual components and sometimes you can feel vibrations!
I hope these guys haven't driven you to be a dealer only customer....being in the business myself it irks me to hear about other independent shops that don't have good business practices as it gives all independent shops a bad reputation. Take time and visit multiple independent shops in the area and try to find someone that you like. Ask friends and co workers! A lot of times finding a decent independent shop is like finding a diamond in the rough!

Man im real sorry you keep having so many problems with these guys! At my shop the customer is always #1 and unless they are being absolutely ridiculous i always treat them with the utmost respect. These things are generally pretty simple to diagnose....have a friend rock your truck back and forth while you slide underneath, look and listen for any play or noise....use your hand to feel individual components and sometimes you can feel vibrations!

Yea just do it and be done with it. Youtube has a couple of videos that can be very useful. Just be careful cause could be dangerous if you have no clue to what you're getting into :fear:..
