Rear air bags

I went and had a new set of tires and rims installed on my 1993 4 runner. While they had the rear tires off they ask if I knew that I had rear air bags inside the rear coils, nope, did 93's come with rear air bags??? or is it somebodys add on. Can't find anything in the owners manual about air bag's .

Not OEM, it has to be an add-on. Should be a schroeder valve somewhere to air them up. Look for an air line coming from the bags and follow that back.

Not really needed unless you (a) carry heavy loads, or (b), want to enhance rear ground clearance while offroading.

Who knows if yours still hold air, however.

I guess its time to start the compressor and air them up. Maybe they were running shine and didn't want the back to sag....:biggrin2:

Don't get carried away with the compressor. Max pressure is typically 30-35 psi.

the coil springs have been known to pinch the air bags and cause leaks so don't be surprised if they don't work

Dropzone, wasn't surprised, and they came down as fast as they went up, But I found something else. In front of the spare tire carrier and attached to the rear diff is this thing,



any ideas as to what it does and how???

LOAD SENSING PROPORTIONING AND BY-PASS VALVE (LSP & BV)

(a) Adjust the length of the No.2 shackle.
Low pressure - Lengthen A
High pressure - Shorten A
Initial set: 78 mm (3.07 in.)
Adjusting range: 68 - 88 mm (2.68 - 3.46 in.)

HINT: One turn of the nut changes the fluid pressure about 137 kPa (1.4 kgf.cm, 20 psi).
