Rear armor

So some poor girl side swiped my 4Runner in my gated community, can we say texting and driving, and I’ll have some extra money to throw at it. I’m looking for recommendations for a rear armored bumper. I want a spare tire and jerry can back there. Thanks!

I've got a CBI hybrid rear that works great. Not listed on their website, but anything CBI does is great.

I looked around A LOT for our 4th gens. CBI definitely is the better option in my opinion, but for over 2k it was just too much for some rear armor, tire carrier and jerry can holder.

4x4labs and coastal offroad have kits for the rear end also.

Decided to make my own tire carrier welded to the rear cross member, with the oe bumper still in place. One day when the bumper gets torn to bits I'll probably order a kit and add my swingout or just build my own. With a lift and tires, I haven't run into anything yet where I've needed the rear armor. One day...

Wonder what some local fab shops would charge for a custom setup, based on the designs already out there...if you have the time to leave the truck at a shop.

edit: reading a recent thread and sounds like Demello will be coming out with one this year. Not sure when or how much, but I like their stuff and run their front bumper and sliders.

Thanks for the info. Yea 2k is a lot.
I really want to get 295’s or 285/75’s add a BL and full under armor. Right there is north of 2k. Maybe doing what you did is the way to go. I’ve been eyeing coastal’s weld together kit. I think I know someone who can weld that for me. I can care less about the dent I’m just shocked it wasn’t from a rock.

I feel like that is much better use of your cash, unless you really plan on dropping that rear end on some rocks.

This is what inspired me to make my tire carrier: Toyota 120 Platforms Forum

You don't need a body lift to run 295s or 285s. I'm not even running one for 35s.

My sliders were welded a little to high. The rear doors just brush them and I know they will bend some. So that’s part of the reason on the BL.

Get them cut off and welded correctly. I've got bolt on sliders that do the same thing and I really need to get that fixed. Body lift is unnecessary and it raises your center of gravity. Dunno about you but I like hanging out in rocks more than fire roads.

Your right I’ll just end up doing that. Was thinking the easy route. What caster setting are you using and how much trimming and hammering to fit the larger tires? I’m wanting to stay under 35”s because I keep reading about people breaking there rear end with that size.

People break their rear ends by doing stupid shit, haha. Mostly by too much skinny pedal going up stuff, or letting their rear ends hop around trying to get up stuff too fast. I'm still not sure why my rear end went out other than just too much wheeling too often. Worked out for me. Gears and lockers are an amazing upgrade. Had to hammer in the pinch welds, cut my cab mounts, and I'm about 1" trimmed off the fender but I need to do about another inch still. Haven't touched the rear yet, but I can't really tell if I'm actually rubbing anything. I do have a 3" coil in the rear though to handle the bumper weight. I'm at 3.3 caster on both sides right now.

Thanks for the input. Most likely will get 295’s and under belly protection.
Think I’m doing Old Dale St. Patrick’s weekend with my brother, he has a 13’ trail done up some. Will end up giving him my 275’s.

Well I ended up going a different route from what the title is. Ordered some Mickey Thompson MT 295/70/17 and new wheels, rci skid package, metal tech LT rear, and new king 650# coils to put in my 6112’s.

I was to chicken shit to try 35”s. I thought about it hard though.

I want to hear how the LT rear kit turns out. Been eyeing that for a longgg time as well. And those skids too. Good choices!!

I've been running the lt rear forever. Just upgraded to the 3" coils to handle the weight. I love the way it drives on and off road. My only regret was not getting the long travel specific icons from metal tech. It's only about another inch over the extended travel, but sometimes that little extra helps.

Yea I can’t wait. I hope to have everything in before April. Planning a Moab trip the first week.
I was going to ask about the rear shocks. I currently have the 5160’s which are good for 2”. I’m guessing I’ll need to buy the new shocks.

Your shocks will be the limiting factor of the rear suspension. You'll lose travel. If you still have a sway bar in the rear, that will limit the long travel of the coils too.

Yea that’s what I figured. I ditched my rear sway bar a long time ago. Thinking about removing the front. Guess I’ll be spending another 300.

Well I got the metal tech medium coils in. That’s was a fun install solo. 295’s stuffed in there with some good amount of trimming. Now just waiting on my skids, King front 650#’s,rear links, icon/mt coils, and extended brake line. Hope it all gets here before April I just planned a Moab trip.
