Rear Audio Q's

FYI, i JUST picked up mah ride last nite so i didnt have time to play with all the bells and whistles.

hey guys, i didnt feel like reading that +300 page manual, so im gonna ask you guys. I have the JBL upgrade with rear controls, but:

1. Do back seat passengers need the wireless headphones in order to be listening to different audio?

2. Can the remote control work for the entire car so the back seat peeps adjust what we all listen to?

For all of you that just want to reply, "do a search blah blah blah" dont waste my time and tell me that because i already did.

I don't know about you guys but my daughter can change the channel and volume up front with the remote when the headphones are not on. She has done it and I was driving and witnessed it and yelled at her to turn the damn thing back down.

So I say it is still two yes' (sp?)

ummm, never seen it done. If you say its possible I'll have to play with it a little bit more.

thats a situation i wouldnt have thought of. have to try it out. it may be they fixed that in the 04's.


i do know the WH will shutoff after 3.5 minutes of no audio signal. and since the WH are passive and only recv. signals, how would the HU know that they are off? do you mean the remote roof sensor is off and the the remote is somehow controlling the HU? or is the roof sensor on and the WH are off?

ok i tested the rear audio and WH setup with the WH off. i imagine the rear sensor pods is detecting the WH are on/off. when they are on, source control is independent of front and rear. when the WH are off and rear sensor pod is on the following occurs.

1. yes
2. depends

on #2 you can control the front HU thru the rear sensor pod IF the FRONT and REAR SOURCE are the same.

ie: radio front and rear, you can cycle thru the presets or scan thru the freq's

on cd/tape you can FF/RW the tracks or skip FF/RR the tracks.

well you could, just hop in the back seat with the vehicle on. or sit in the front seat and articulate your arm behind you (which i did).

as far as 3rd party WH, im not sure. it depends on the freq the rear sensor pod is transmitting at and finding WH that recv's that freq.

A couple of years ago, I bought a Sony 32" Vega XBR TV that came with a set of wireless headphones. I couldn't figure out why I would ever need these for watching TV. They now reside in the 4Runner. They work great

There are no markings that would indicate what the carrier frequency would be. It would have to be outside of the radio spectrum of course, or radio stations would interfere with transmission.

They run on Infrared not RF. The ones I use came "free" with a TV I bought 2 years ago. They work great with the 4Runner. They are Sony Wireless Headphones Model MDR-IF0230 the MSRP on them is $49.99.

The toyota WH that came with my DVD setup work great. My daughter can be wathing a movie and I can have the stereo turned up all the way and all she heres is the headphones.

Toy-Man, thanks for the SONY info. I have the Toyota brand WH. It seems comfortable and well constructed, but the bass response is poor. Does anyone have any idea whether the SONY or any other alternative has better bass repsonse?

Is the GX470 WH the same as the Toyota (except for the price and label), or is it a better design?

The spec sheet above suggests 18 Hz - 22 Khz if that really means anything. They sound really good to me, but I'm half deaf (lol). I have not tried the Toyota headset so I can't do a comparison. I hardly ever the use the headset. I just happened to have those phones sitting around the house so I tried them with the rear remote and they worked great.
