Rear axle part clip?

So I'm in the middle of installing a spool, pull out my 3rd member and I find these "clips" of some sort, I don't know what the hell they do but one of them is broken and I've found little pieces of it at the bottom of the housing.
I've searched and examined countless diagrams and come up empty, no idea what it is( first time I've actually disassembled a 3rd member).

So any ideas?

Also the two "sleeves or clips whatever they are , are loose as can be and I could easily remove them

Are they supposed to be part of the 3rd member and came out? I just pulled my 3rd 2 weeks ago (1995, factory 4.88) and it definately didn't have anything like that in there.

A couple places call them oil baffles or splash guards. New one on me!
Maybe mine were in deeper and I didn't see them.

You talking about the oil deflectors that slide into the axle tubes? What year is your axle? Not all rears have em

Axle is 85 as far as I know. So these things are supposed to help keep the gear oil from sloshing around as much? Makes sense I guess, but they were just chillin in there , don't know how they weren't making a racket.
Also the one that is broken has been like that for a while I'm guessing and I got very lucky the shards of metal didn't get caught up in the pinion or spiders somehow.
You think I'm alright just taking em out, no harm no foul?

So to follow up on this, yes it's officially called an Oil Deflector.

Mine didnt have em, looks like they keep oil out of the tubes when the 3rds installed...not necessary imo if your seal are good
