Rear axle question

When I bought my 4runner I knew it needed work and one of the next things I need to replace is my rear axle because it is bent. Now my question is would it matter what 3rd gen year I get my axle from? And are there any differences in the different years?

Pretty sure all axles are the same. I know a few rigs running rears from different rears. If you're replacing the whole axle the diff gears need to be the same if you're 4x4

Negative. They are not all the same. A lot have different axle wides and are also different due to the E-locker option. Yes, they do have different gears in the differential. The link below will tell you some axle lengths for example but that is not the only difference. There is also axle with/out ABS.

Erik's Toyota Differential info

I don't know remember enough about the rear axle to tell you everything about them but I do know enough to know that all rear axles are not the same.

I'd be interested to find out how someone bent the rear axle. Not that anyone understands it but for some reason Toyota solid axle housing are fairly strong.

Well I do know my 4runner came from Moab Utah and the guy did a lot of off roading and then it was in a wreck in the rear so maybe that is how it bent? I don't know, all I know is that its bent and I need a full rear axle. I'll look into it more, I just thought I would ask you guys first maybe I can find a year or model that could possibly upgrade my 4runner rear end. Since I need to replace it i see no reason to go back to stock.

do you have a toyota elocker on your existing axle? if so you are down to 2 choices , 4.10 gears and 4.30 gears, i'd check your vin# with toyota to see what gears it came with. as far as the housing goes its pretty much direct swap, ABS no abs all that bull shit, pull the freaking abs plug, who the hell needs abs.
