Rear Bumper Dirt?

Anyone else use their trunk a lot and getting these constant stains on their pants? Its starting to annoy the crap out of me because the minute I lean in to put something in the trunk or pull it out, I get this stain on my pants right at mid thigh level.

I tried everything from cleaning and waxing the car, to not using the rear wipers or even the windshield spray but after a week of driving, the rear bumper is always dirty or has this thin layer of soot that sticks to pants and won't come off unless you use stain remover. I wouldn't mind it much but I throw my workbags in the trunk and when I get to work I got these mechanic stains across my pants before I even start working.

A few options:

*Buy a minivan (see above):barf:
*Wash the 4runner every day
*Reach with your arms
*Toss your stuff in the passenger or rear seats
*Wear black pants
*Get a job as a mechanic

My 4Runner does not have a trunk, it has a rear cargo area :uzi:
 
Yep, there is always gonna be dirt collecting on the back bumper. I would suggest getting a sliding cargo tray, which would probably need to be aftermarket.

But if you wear black pants then you have to ask for black napkins at the restaurant, the white ones will get lint "literally" all over your nice trousers..
 
You might try adding velcro to a drop cloth and leaving it in the cargo area. Use the hook side of the velcro to attach it to the rear carpet and leave it in there, flopping it out over the bumper when you need access. That's all I can think of besides a sliding tray.

right...cuz some of us dont just use our 4runners for offroading or weekend getaways but also because we use it to haul our families to from daily activities and work. the question was asked because i work in a tech company and where i meet with clients on a daily basis so I need to at least not have shit on my pants when i walk into a meeting room. And with 3 car seats in the back from the toddlers, there isn't much room in the back which is why i store stuff in the "cargo" area...

but hey...i guess every helpful forum has to have one dick with no useful input.
 
You just need to adjust your technique a bit. Try this, go out on the weekend when the truck is dirty and practice. Wear some light colored pants so you that you can see your results. Put a few items in the back, then start practicing - take them out of the back, put them back. Observe the results on your pants. Now start making adjustments - try standing farther away from the vehicle, try reaching with your arms instead of leaning from your legs. Your issue happens when you lean your legs against the bumper so that's your key: the object here is to not lean against your bumper with your legs. Try adjusting your foot position too - maybe one foot a little in front of the other. It might take all day but I bet after a few hundred reps you'd get it down. You've got this!

You could try an equipment change too. Go to Ross or Kohls or someplace like that that sells clothes cheap. As you look around in there you'll find that the pants vary in shade quite a bit from dark to light. Now, here's the key: light colors show dirt more than dark colors. That's what you really want to focus on here. Buy a few cheap pairs of pants in varying shades, then try them out. Put them on and lean against the truck. Observe how much the dirt shows on various shades. You could even combine this activity with your practice above. Once you've zeroed in on a shade that doesn't show dirt as much as the others you can go out and buy the brand you want in similar shades to that.

Towel method

I just leave an old beach towel in the back. When you lean into get something, Toss that towel over the rear bumper, and your problem is solved.
Additional plus is that you now have a towel to clean up spills.
I'm sure that happens a lot with 3 car seats in the back!
 
The best results I’ve had for not getting excess dirt on the vehicle is parking it in my garage. I have a blower like the old grocery stores used to have to keep bugs out that blows the dirt off. The ventilation system is set perfectly in there and has negative pressure to suck all the residual particles out to keep my daily driver CTS-V road ready. Easy system!

I keep an old painters dropcloth in the back for wrapping and padding. When Im loading in or out, it drops down over the bumper, and protects it and my clothes. (Also have the canvasback on the way, which I hope will be an easier and better looking solution)

thats how my wife uses it.....hence being a van. and you're welcome:peace:
